It’s almost unbelievable that a makeup trend would last as long as the smoky eye has. Can you imagine if that hot pink cheek streak on Denise from the first episode of The Cosby Show had stuck around until now? In fact, I think the only other beauty trend that can go up against smoky eyes in terms of longevity is the red lip.
But I digress.

Ever since Cleopatra darkened her lids with coal soot women have spent centuries trying to achieve the perfect, vixenous come-hither eye makeup. Throughout the years, we’ve found an assortment of ways to update the smoky eye by way of adding a mod cat liner, incorporating glitter, and even continuing the smoke into the bottom lid.
One of my personal favourite ways to update the smoky eye is by adding a little bit of colour to it. This can be done in a multitude of ways, from using coloured eyeliner only, to having an entire palette of fabulously hued shadows. I chose to do a colourful smoky eye using the latter.
One of my favourite products to use in this case is Hard Candy’s Top Ten Eye Shadow collection in Feelin Blue? – a palette filled with a range of blue shades. Since not every eye colour is complimented by every shadow shade, you can pick from a range of different colour combinations. My brown eyes really pop when backed by blues. Green eyes look amazing with any shade from the purple family; blue eyes do well with warmer shades in the gold, bronze and champagne families; and hazel eyes are complimented by both the lightest and darkest ends of the red spectrum.

My favourite part about Hard Candy’s palette in particular is that it is equipped with 10 shades of your desired colour and it goes from the palest to the absolutely smokiest. I used the blues to get my own look, and thanks to the range of choices it could have been much darker or even flashier.
Break out of the ‘neutral and earth tones’ smoky eyes that everyone is used to and throw a shocking colour into the mix. The best part about having a wild eye is that the rest of your beauty regimen can be (and should be) played down. No worries about bleeding lip colours or cracked concealers. Everything else on your face should be light and simple.
Prepare your eye with a smidge of primer and you’ll be sure that all those shadows stay put for your whole night.
