There’s no questioning that New York City is one of the most popular US tourist destinations.
NYC set a record in 2018, recording a whopping 65.2 million visitors, over 13 million of which were international. A little over 51 million were domestic travelers.
What does this mean for New York City? Nothing new—tourism is their bread and butter. Shopping, restaurants, museums, and more are what makes this spot so, well, hot.
But what about outdoor activities in New York the state? New York is more than its famed namesake city. It has so much to offer in the way of nature, despite its concrete jungle reputation.
Here are some great ideas to get you outside on your next vacation.
When Seasonal, Try Blueberry Picking
A quick Google search of “berry picking near me” will reveal loads of options, especially in the prime month of July.
Blueberry picking is an equal balance of effort and ease. The activity itself takes a little bit of work on the picker’s part, but you get to enjoy all the benefits—eating berries by the handful or making pie, for example.
You-pick farms are spread throughout New York state and are a great family or solo activity. Nothing says “farm-to-table” quite like being a farmer for a day.
Feeling Brave? Climb the Gunks
If you’re looking for something a little more adventurous, The Gunks (Shawangunks) is one of the US’ best climbing spots.
Experienced climbers especially will find much joy in the offerings of this notable spot. The fact that it’s only 85 miles from NYC itself makes it an easy and quick trip for residents and tourists alike.
The Gunks feature quartz rock that has horizontal, rather than vertical, cracks. You’ll find tons of jugs, traverses, roofs, and dynamic power moves that send you through the “big air.”
September and October are some of the best times to enjoy this outdoor activity in New York state, as the weather promotes a dry, enjoyable, and mostly bug-free experience.
Go Paddling—In the Bronx
Well, kind of!
Paddling the 23-mile-long Bronx river is one of the best New York state summer activities one can do. Eight miles of the trip flows right through the heart of the Bronx.
You might be surprised to find that the Bronx is comprised of several miles of beautiful forest, mostly in the Northern part. Enjoy this green and serene view before paddling into the more industrial part of the Bronx, one of many areas that NYC is famous for.
There Are Endless Outdoor Activities in New York
You just have to find them!
Use this list to get you started, and don’t forget the best part about visiting this multicultural, biodiverse state—exploring.
