Sometimes when a celebrity, band, or artist gets too famous the mystery is gone and somehow my interest disappears; and, I’ll be honest, it’s replaced with a bit of cynicism. I think we can all agree that it’s refreshing when someone surprises you. Whether it’s someone you’ve heard of through the grapevine, a complete stranger, or a celebrity. Last week, when trying to figure out who to write for this week’s #MusicMondays, I was watching Jimmy Kimmel Live yet again and that night’s musical guests was the band Bleachers. I was excited until I found out that the front man is Jack Antonoff from the band fun., who’s also dating Lena Dunham. Eye rolls ensued. While watching the first part of the show, I went on iTunes to get some ideas. Oddly enough, Bleachers’ single “Shadow” was the free single of the week.
The band came on and performed their hit single “I Wanna Get Better.” Right away I was intrigued as it was more (I hate to say) fun than I find fun. to be. I had no idea Antonoff was a great and successful songwriter. He has co-writing credits with artists such as Christina Perri, Tegan and Sara, and Taylor Swift. Aside from the energy and talent, “I Wanna Get Better” is incredibly catchy.

After listening to “Shadow,” I’m convinced Bleachers’ debut album, Strange Desire (released July 15th), will be on repeat for a lot of people this summer. If you’re going to Osheaga it’ll probably be worth it to check out Bleachers when they play on August 1st. They’ll also be playing at The Phoenix Concert Theatre on August 27th in Toronto. (Get tickets here.)
Follow Bleachers on Facebook and Twitter for all updates, and make sure to head out to your local record store and pick up their album, Strange Desire, available now.
