This week I’m giving a shout out to a new band from my hometown of Newmarket, Ontario. It’s easy to assume that nothing too artistic could come out of a suburban town but some awesome bands, and even some Hollywood stars, have put Newmarket on the map. We have Tokyo Police Club, The Salads, Hannah Georgas and we even had Jim Carey at one point. This past week I’ve been listening to family band Bordeen who I think might be the next special thing out of the ‘burb just north of Toronto. Ryan and Brianna Bordihn take lead vocals with their brother Daniel on drums, along with brothers Billy and Murray Heaton on guitar and bass.
This music is indie rock with elements of blues and pop topped with melodic harmonies that make the whole listening experience pleasant and uplifting. I found myself singing along and tapping my foot constantly while listening. The band is creating some buzz in the Toronto scene playing Lee’s Palace, The Mod Club, and Opera House. It’s impressive, especially given that they’ve only been a band for a couple years.
Along with that, their single “Don’t Close Your Eyes” is playing across Canadian radio. They also have a must-see holiday show: A Not So Silent Night In The Annex at The Measure (296 Brunswick Ave.) in Toronto on December 6th. I won’t be missing this, as I don’t think Bordeen will be disappearing anytime soon. Listen to their debut album here on Bandcamp. If you like it, support the band by purchasing it for $7 USD.
