I swear, almost every band I look into lately is from Australia. I don’t know what’s going on down there, but Aussie land is giving the world some pretty awesome music lately. After forming five years ago, I can finally add Boy & Bear to my list of artists on my radar. In the past year I made a quick switch over to Indie88, and since I don’t listen to the radio often there’s the odd time I hear a song that I really love. As for many other people, their song “Southern Sun” has been a catchy folk/rock tune that, although sometimes overplayed, is always enjoyable. To dig a little deeper, I looked up Boy & Bear’s video for “Harlequin Dream” off their new album of the same title. There are scenes of the beautiful Filipino landscape of Palawan and it is so beautifully shot – the same goes for many of their other videos.
If you tend to get into bands who are really solid in their sound, then Boy & Bear is my suggestion this week. Their songs like “Rabbit Song” and “Feeding Line” are just plain great. These guys really know what they’re doing, and, listening to their older material, personally I think they were just as good three years ago as they are today. Rather impressive. I only compare artists to others to give you readers a better idea of someone’s sound, and Boy & Bear is a woven web of so many bands that tug at my heartstrings, such as Fleet Foxes, Death Cab for Cutie, Coldplay (earlier a.k.a. better) and newer Wintersleep. Boy & Bear will be coming back to Toronto on October 18th, performing at The Queen Elizabeth Theatre with Reuben and the Dark. Buy tickets here and head out to your local record store to pick up Harlequin Dream, out now.
Don’t forget to like Boy & Bear on Facebook and follow them on Twitter.
