Last year when I was working at a record store I heard of the band Foxygen. We played their album, We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic, which was released earlier in 2013. I was immediately hooked. I recently came across the album again and decided to take some time to relax and listen to it in its entirety. What a great record. The production and editing, along with the music itself, gives you vibes reminiscent of New York City bohemia or California surf rock. Like the sounds of Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Dandy Warhols before them, Foxygen is bringing back the revival of American garage rock mixed with psychedelic influences like the duo MGMT. Foxygen has pulled their sound from several genres and artists, creating something melancholy yet exciting. It’s damn good… just go listen. If you have a record player, even better – pick it up on vinyl.
I’m keeping my eyes out for when the band comes to Toronto, as vocalist Sam France is known to put on quite a show. Aside from hitting himself in the face and literally breaking a leg, he’s a little wild on-stage.
The band hails from California (they formed in 2005) and only recently started getting widely recognized. With three studio albums under their belt, I’m excited to see what’s to come from these guys. We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic has received great reviews, and rightfully so. The record is enjoyable from the beginning right to the end.
