I love BuzzFeed. However, I wouldn’t want to know the amount of time I’ve actually spent on their website browsing through their famous lists. I’m either educated on something or reminded of how old I am through these rundowns, so a new music artist is one of the last things I expected to discover on the site. Last month, a post was made titled ‘This British Teen Made The Most Refreshing Song You’ll Hear All Summer.” Obviously, I had to check it out. Uzoechi Osisioma Emenike, better known as MNEK, is a 19-year-old South-Londoner whose resume is impressive to say the least. For the past 3 years, MNEK has received success with his production and writing skills, earning credits on tracks by the likes of Misha B, Kylie Minogue, and Gorgon City. Last year, he received a Grammy nomination for being a co-writer on the popular club track “Need U (100%)” by Duke Dumont featuring A*M*E.
The first song I heard from MNEK was “Every Little Word,” as the music video was premiering on BuzzFeed. The song is incredibly catchy and filled with intricate funk beats that make it difficult to stay still when listening to the track. The video is just as catchy and fun. It’s always refreshing to see a young person so confident in their art and talent, and when they bring something new to the table it’s a game changer. It’s almost June and 2014 is already proving to be a huge year for MNEK as a new pop artist. If you’re skeptical, listen to the more stripped down song “Don’t Call This Love” as it showcases his strong and powerful vocals similar to those of Luther Vandross. MNEK has my undivided attention and I can’t wait to see what else is to come from him this year. Follow MNEK on Twitter and Facebook to be notified of any upcoming tours and releases.
