Well, it’s been a pretty melancholy week for me. If you live in Toronto it’s easy to assume my week’s been this way due to the weather. It’s been a long winter and I think we can all agree that we’re over it at this point. This past week I’ve randomly been listening to Rhye’s debut album, Woman. I surprised myself a little bit because when this record first came out I actually disliked it. Blame it on the weather, but recently the songs have been on repeat and I love it. Michael Milosh (Canadian) and Robin Hannibal (Danish) make up the duo based out of LA. If you’ve only listened to their music, it’s probably really surprising that the vocalist is a male. Milosh’s singing is incredibly high pitched for a male but in this whispery, romantic, Norah Jones-esque voice. Although it threw me off at first, I find it absolutely beautiful.
Woman (available on iTunes) is a perfect record for a rainy day snuggling on the couch with your warmest blanket. It’s lightly electronic with touches of strings and keys, but it’s really led by the soft and tranquil vocals. Individually, both Milosh and Hannibal have previous successes with music and happened to be on the same indie label, Plug Research. Considering their music was highly influenced by jazz and electronica it’s no surprise those genres have leaked over to this project and with the R&B touch, Rhye is close to perfection. If you don’t know where to start, I’m going to suggest listening to the song “Open” then go from there. The video is beautiful and I won’t apologize for the romanticism rubbing off on you. Rhye will be performing at NXNE in Toronto this year on June 21st.
