Every once in a while a new artist or song will pop up on my radar, and after diving into their music and becoming borderline obsessed it’s only a matter of time before I start spreading the word to my friends. Recently, I’ve been absolutely swooning over British singer Sam Smith. And at only 21 years-old, he’s already making his mark on music, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s already hearing whispers about a Grammy.
Back in the fall of 2012, Sam Smith appeared on the Disclosure song “Latch,” and later, this past January, released his debut EP Nirvana. The song “Money on My Mind” got me hooked. It’s a great song, but Smith’s voice carries it entirely. Listening to some of the slower songs such as “Lay Me Down” and “Stay With Me,” the soul and emotion behind his voice is truly moving. Don’t be surprised if some of these songs become part of a soundtrack to your life.

Loving the music right off the bat, I watched some interviews with Smith on Vevo. One thing I can appreciate about anyone these days is embracing who they are. He has said that the title of his debut album, In the Lonely Hour, reflects that he’s never been in a relationship before. This self discovery has resulted in such beautiful music and songwriting.
Whether this is the first time you’re hearing of Sam Smith or not, I can promise you it won’t be the last. Smith will be performing to a sold out audience at the Mod Club this Wednesday, but considering it sold out so quickly there’s a good chance he’ll be coming back after the album release on June 17th.
