I work in artist management in the Canadian music industry and, after years of listening to and learning about so many bands, I then went to school for music. Needless to say, after a while I wasn’t going out of my way to find new music to listen to. After school ended, the internship phase came into play. With this, I was thrown tons of new bands I had never heard of. I was able to do a bit of work for some, and others I simply became a new fan of, such as Australian indie band, The Jezabels. If you’ve never heard of them before, their debut album Prisoner will truly impress you.
Forming in 2007, the band released three well-received EPs before releasing Prisoner in 2011. Without a doubt, it’s one of my favourite records of that year. I can’t help but get an “American Gothic” vibe when I listen to their album. It’s dark and atmospheric, led by front woman Hayley Mary’s strong vocals. The music is rock alternative with touches of synth and disco elements, presented as something hauntingly beautiful. People always say that an album that you can listen to from beginning to an end is one worth having in your collection. Prisoner definitely fits into that category.
Whether you’re already a fan or just becoming one now, you’ll be happy to hear The Jezabels are releasing their sophomore album The Brink on February 18, 2014. I’ve never had the opportunity to see them perform live, but after their Australian and European tour early next year, I have my fingers crossed that they’ll have a few Canadian dates. You can purchase Prisoner on iTunes for $9.99 and check out the video for their new single “The End” on YouTube here. Like The Jezabels on Facebook and follow them on Twitter.
