We’re heading over to western Canada in Vancouver for this week’s #MusicMonday. British Columbia is an amazing province for discovering new music. Listening to bands such as Yukon Blonde and White Ash Falls (both hailing from BC) I eventually heard about The Zolas. Their single, “Knot In My Heart,” has been in heavy rotation on alternative radio stations so there’s a good chance you might’ve heard it before. The band is not new to the music scene as members Zachary Gray and Tom Dobrzanski gained a solid fan base with their band Lotus Child prior to creating The Zolas. Their debut album, Tic Toc Tic, was released in 2009; their follow up, Ancient Mars, was released later in 2012. If your favoured genre is indie rock then I suggest checking out the album – if you haven’t already.
Although The Zolas are generally indie rock, they definitely have their own musical sound. There are tastes of New York bohemia in songs like “In Heaven” and “Cold Moon” with California surf rock influence throughout. Ancient Mars is a record full of nothing but good vibes and perfect songs for summer listening. The songwriting is honest and sincere while the guitar, heavy throughout the album, carries the mood of each song.
If you’re into bands such as the Arctic Monkeys and Tame Impala, then make sure to give The Zolas a listen. They’re about to embark on a Canadian tour playing in cities in Ontario starting with Kingston on April 1st and making their way back to British Columbia for the final show in Victoria on April 16th. The band is playing Lee’s Palace this Saturday in Toronto with James Younger, so make sure to grab yourself a ticket. Make a trip to your local music store to pick up Ancient Mars or purchase it on iTunes. Be sure to check them out on Facebook and Twitter for all their latest updates.
