When people ask what I do for a living, and I say I am a full time sneaker and collectible reseller, I get inquisitive looks. But when I tell them I turned my side gig into a 7 figure full-time business, that’s when the questions really start coming! How does it work? Did you go to school for that? How can I get involved?
To be honest, it all started with a couple hundred dollars and a hustler mindset.
An Intro into Reselling Sneakers
I have always loved going to the local outlets to buy sneakers, but I always bought them for personal use. One day, when I went to return a few pairs of sneakers I had purchased a few months prior, I realized I had missed the return-by date and was out of luck. At the time, I heard of people reselling online and figured I might as well give it a try. I quickly learned that the sneakers I had bought for $50 were reselling for triple the price online. I gave it a go and within an hour, my first pair of shoes were sold. I thought maybe it was beginner’s luck but when I sold all three pairs on day one, I knew I was onto something bigger.
A little while after I started, I was let go from my previous job and while admittedly I wasn’t happy about it in the moment, it turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to me. That’s the day I decided to turn reselling into my full time career. I bought a couple thousand dollars worth of sneakers and started selling them online. In no time, I was meeting and then very quickly exceeding my previous income.
Reselling with StockX
As my business grew, I started looking for ways to expand and grow. That’s when I first came across StockX. I registered to become a reseller, and when I had a few follow up questions on how it all works, I emailed the company. I was blown away when I not only got a quick response, but saw that it was from one of StockX’s original co-founders. It was clear to me that the team was dedicated to their brand. The passion that the team had when they first started this business is still going strong, even as they have become a global brand.
As a reseller, StockX makes the entire selling process seamless for me. Without the support of the platform, I would likely have to hire a full team to manage the process, but they do so much of the heavy lifting that I can manage things on my own and continue to focus on ways to expand and grow my business.
And that business has skyrocketed during the pandemic! It’s in part because people are shopping more online, but also largely because more and more consumers want unique, hard-to-find, limited edition products. StockX connects buyers and sellers from around the globe so even if your local retailer doesn’t have stock of the latest drop, you can find it on StockX.
This year, I also expanded my reselling business, adding trading cards to my roster. I started to notice how well trading cards were doing on StockX and decided to jump in. That’s another benefit of using the platform — StockX continues to expand their product offering, which provides sellers more opportunities to grow as well. I have now expanded the trading card side of my business — In addition to selling online, I now have a small storefront.
It may not be a typical career and I wouldn’t say it’s easy. I am working all the time; but I love it! That rush I felt when I resold three pairs in one day still happens, even though I’m selling far more sneakers these days.
