Summer in Toronto is one of my favourite things about living in the city. Between patios and trips to the island, though, there’s very little time to sleep, and more often than not my skin suffers for it. As if the lack of sleep, drinking sugary drinks, and constant work isn’t enough, the weather has to get in to my pores, too.
Enter Simple Skincare: a skincare line specifically designed for city life, addressing everything that we face just by living in an urban area. Living in a city means more pollution, more stress, and often less sleep; all of that takes a toll on your sensitive skin, and slathering on products loaded with harsh chemicals will only make it worse. Simple Skincare remains true to their name with products free of chemicals, perfumes, and dyes, choosing instead to focus on vitamins, minerals, and a straightforward philosophy of using only products that are ‘kind’ to your skin.
While I could do without the lovey-dovey branding, I appreciate the simplicity (ha!) of the product. After using it for a week I’ve found that my skin is brighter, cleaner, and I haven’t had a single break-out since I started using Simple daily. I’m using three of the Simple products: the Foaming Cleanser; the Cleansing Facial Wipes; and the Protecting Light Moisturizer with SPF 15. All of the products combine well without ever feeling oily or greasy, and my skin is looking and feeling healthier lately. I’ve also noticed that in the past week I’ve been wearing less makeup – these days mascara, bronzer, and gloss feel, and looks, like enough. For a girl who’s been wearing concealer since she was 14, that kind of change in just a week is pretty amazing.
Of all the products, though, the wipes are my personal favourite. They are by far the best product I’ve used to get my makeup off at the end of the day, and because they have no chemicals my eyes don’t burn and go red when I take off my mascara. As an added bonus, when you’re too tired to make it all the way to the bathroom the wipes work as a great next-to-the-bed option because sometimes city girls are too tired to walk across their tiny condos and wash their face in the sink like damn grown-ups. Seriously, it’s hard enough just to turn off the lights and get undressed.
