Vv Magazine’s industry insiders and undercover scenesters fill you in on the best first-hand gossip from Hollywood, the media, and everything in between. A column that will make you lust for more… who are we talking about? We don’t tell – but we see and hear things and like you, we gossip about it. Check in every Wednesday for the latest from Scene & Heard!
We know, we know. Back in Toronto, the Notable Awards were going on last week, but the majority of Vv Magazine’s Scenesters have been hanging poolside in Miami and putting the “art” in “party hard at Art Basel.” We’re back in cold Canadaland today, and here to warm you up with all the celebrity-related action we’ve seen and heard about while hittin’ up one of the biggest multi-day fetes of the year.
Love Hurts: Leonardo DiCaprio Breaks Up With Toni Garrn & Takes Home A Harem Of Women
Juice Factor: 10/10
Sure, the place to be and stay all week was at Miami Beach Edition Hotel, which officially launched during Art Basel and is an art creation in itself by Canadian design firm, Yabu Pushelberg. The hotel kicked off hardcore with parties by London Horse Meat Disco, Visionaire, and W. That said, when we spotted Canadian model Toni Garrn – who happens to also be Leonardo DiCaprio’s latest girlfriend – looking forlorn by the pool at Soho House on Thursday, we knew something was up. You’ve heard about the apparent breakup between Leo and Toni that led to Leo allegedly partying with unlikely co-revelers like Brandon Davis and Joe Jonas (who busied himself with PHHHOTO App to avoid tarnishing his Christian soul with bad behaviour, obvi) at the pop-up version of 1OAK at Rec Room in South Beach – after which he went home with 20 women from the VIP section of the party. At least we can all hope they were legal age, yes? Who has the time to ID when you’re herding your harem home? Lance Bass and celebrity shoe designer Brian Atwood were also at the party, but Leo leaving with a gaggle of gals on his arm Wolf of Wall Street-style certainly stole everyone’s thunder. Is it method acting or just perv behaviour?
Kim Kardashian’s Bum Hosts A Party
Juice Factor: 8/10
On Friday, we spotted fellow Torontonian Shauna Levy, president of the Design Exchange, dancing to DJ Swizz Beatz at the VH1 party at club Mansion. Even though Joe Jonas and 2 Chainz walked the red carpet, it wasn’t much of a celeb-filled fete, so we hit up Surfcomber Hotel where newlywed Solange Knowles was spinning and rocked the house. We also hit AVENUE ROAD president Stephan Weishaupt’s private party (he’s also a member of the board at the Design Exchange), where we saw Toronto Fashion Week darling, designer Mikael D, get pushed in the pool fully clothed… followed by some interesting drama that we’re keeping mum on (yes, even us). The real party to be at on Friday was Paper Magazine’s launch dinner for the famous Kim Kardashian #BreakTheInternet issue, where Kim argued that the already famous shot is indeed art: “I am so so pleased with the result of the cover…I love that I did something so artsy and it’s exactly right to be here at Art Basel, because I truly believe what we made is art.” Whatever you say, Kim, whatever you say.
Spotted: Freida Pinto and Canadian Who’s Who
Juice Factor 6/10
After running into the incredibly beautiful Freida Pinto — who is even more beautiful in person, if we do say so ourselves – on the way to Art Miami, we couldn’t help but notice Globe & Mail Society Columnist Nolan Bryant and NKPR’s Natasha Koifman in an intense conversation once there. And not to leave out the Montrealers – stylist extraordinaire and one of our fave personalities from the M-dot, Cary Tauben, danced on the beach at the Soho House Arcade Fire party. Um, yeah, you should be very, very jealous of how awesome that sounds. Also spotted: Klaus Biesenback, Director of the MoMA, walking on the beach sporting a tailored suit in the middle of the day. Apparently it’s the new SPF-60.
When Diddy Punched Drake
Juice Factor: 5/10
We didn’t actually see Diddy allegedly sock 416-er Drake with a knockout punch on Monday night, but just the idea of him saying “You will never disrespect me” before whacking Drizzy sounds a little cartoonish, save for the whole physical violation factor. You should have stayed home, Aubrey, you should have stayed home.
Usher Charges His Phone In A Woman’s Vagina
Juice Factor: There are no words.
Sure, it was an “art installation,” but Usher was caught on camera paying money to charge his phone in a woman’s vagina – one of the many “avant garde” art installations at Art Basel. The question isn’t so much, “But is it art?” – but rather, “Is it hygienic?” File this under: GROSS.
And, yes, stuff happened outside of Miami too. Here’s a look at the gossip and headline-making news that rocked and shocked our world:
Janice Dickinson Says She’s Writing a Bill Cosby Rape Tell-All
Juice Factor: 8/10
After CNN’s Don Lemon interviewed five of Bill Cosby’s rape accusers, he had ‘80s supermodel Janice Dickinson join his TV special, Bill Cosby: A Legend Under Fire. The former supermodel wanted to share her personal accusations towards Cosby, calling him a “despicable rapist” and insisting that “he’s gonna get his… I’m going to write my own book.” Check out the video for yourself.
Jian Ghomeshi Is STILL Making American Headlines
Juice Factor: 8/10
The Newsroom has impeccable timing it seems. In last week’s episode Aaron Sorkin used his drama to tackle the topic of college rape; in the episode, producer Don is asked by his boss to offer money to a rape victim (who’s started a website for rape survivors after being ignored by her school’s administration) to debate her rapist on TV, but Don instead persuades the student, not to do it just in case, you know, the whole rape thing wasn’t even true. Holy step backwards, Hollywood! Salon.com writer Andi Zeisler critiqued it best, explaining that the all the supposed high-brow elements of the Sorkin drama are part of our cultural climate “where the default setting is to not believe the people who say they were raped, to ask them to shut up on the off-chance that a man’s life or livelihood stands to bruise under suspicion. We’ve seen this play out a lot recently, from Woody Allen (“She’s a pawn in his fights with Mia Farrow”) to Jian Ghomeshi (“It was ’50 Shades of Grey’ stuff”) to Bill Cosby (“Those dozens of women lying to get money”) to Shia LeBeouf (“He’s a jerk and he probably liked it”). This is not the boldly contrarian stance of crusaders for the truth. It’s the bottom line of a culture that has always cast about for any and every reason to not believe people who say, ‘I was raped.’”
Madonna Steals Lady Gaga’s Versace Crown
Juice Factor: 6/10
Madonna is the new face of Versace for Spring 2015. Could this be the final nail in the coffin for the one-time alleged rivalry with Lady Gaga? The Queen of Pop is clearly Madge. Donatella says so.
