Vv Magazine’s industry insiders and undercover scenesters fill you in on the best first-hand gossip from Toronto, Hollywood and everywhere in between. Who are we talking about? We don’t tell – but when we see and hear gossip, we let you know. Check in every Wednesday for freshly-squeezed juice, served ice cold.
Blind Item: Local cider-maker buys an entire bar drinks – and runs out on bill
Juice Factor: 9/10
It’s no surprise that a cider-maker likes to get his drank on, but last evening, the owner of a well-known local ciderhouse entered a popular King West pub red-nosed and feeling generous. After buying the entire bar a round of his cider and drunkenly nudging the pub’s regulars quite annoyingly, he quickly made an escape forgetting to pay his (large) tab. Good on the pub for having a savvy bartender who chased the drunken cider-maker down the street to bring him back to settle his tab. Bill paid, the red-nosed drunkie attempted to leave again only to fall face first onto the busy King West corner, attracting attention from those heading home from work. Oh right – did we mention it was only 7 p.m.?
Ben Affleck goes sans wedding ring
Juice Factor: 8/10
Although he’s going to be all jazz hands promoting Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice at Comic Con in San Diego this week, Ben Affleck was looking quite sombre earlier this week in LA after returning from a trip to the Bahamas where he met up with his soon-to-be ex-wife Jennifer Garner and the couple’s three kids.

The pair made plans to meet up at the exotic location just as word spread through the digital era telephone line about their plans to divorce after ten years of marriage. Garner has since taken the kids to Atlanta where she’s shooting a movie, and Affleck finally went without his wedding ring back home in Brentwood, though he was wearing it while in the company of his fam the week before. Does that mean he’s ready to move on or that the reality finally hit home for the former party boy who’s toned down his wild ways in recent years? We guess we’ll find out once he finally surfaces in Toronto for Suicide Squad.
Will Smith parties hard in Toronto
Juice Factor: 9/10
Batman might be laying low, but his Suicide Squad co-star Will Smith is certainly making himself right at home here in Toronto. The Independence Day star spent a very red, white, and – well, red – 4th of July partying the Canadian way at Cabana Pool Bar. And who needs fireworks when the who’s-who of Toronto nightlife are on hand to provide the pretty? Spotted partying in close proximity to the Academy Award-nominated actor were notable social scenesters like Martin Rubio, Ken Bryan, as well as actor Ryan Guzman.
Blind Item: Power couple turned super-charged trio?
Juice Factor: 10/10
No city does yuppie “we have the same beige opinion” power couples quite like Toronto – duos who are simultaneously both the envy and bane of our existence. It’s how Restoration Hardware stays in business. That said, this picture-perfect power couple have a much more colourful love life than we ever gave them credit for. Turns out they’ve just recently spiced up their long-term relationship by inviting a third party into their west-end bedroom. And not just the same third party member. It seems they’re open-minded to switching up the guest star of their relationship. You just might want to catch them out on a Friday or Saturday night if you’re hoping your next threesome comes with freshly-corked champagne and an Uber ride home.
Jane Fonda sips tea at the Shangri-La with girlfriends
Juice Factor: 8/10
How do you get riled up for a protest? We assumed the Thigh Master might have something to do with it, but it turns out actress and fitness icon Jane Fonda just needs tea and crumpets as her version of Popeye’s spinach. The day before joining thousands of protesters at Queen’s Park on Sunday rallying together to tell the government it needs to do more fight climate change, Barbarella herself had a very dignified afternoon tea with friends at the Shangri-La on Saturday. We always suspected carbs weren’t all that evil after all.

Spotted: Favourite Canadian actress Rachel McAdams
Juice Factor: 7/10
Rachel McAdams, the sweetest Canadian gone Hollywood, was home over the weekend munching on delicious vegan fare at My Public Kitchen with a girlfriend. While her new show True Detective isn’t getting rave reviews, we bet she was gabbing about her new relationship with co-star Taylor Kitsch, yet another Canadian co-star love affair. Maybe this one will stick?
Blind Item: Marketing agency not as hot as they want you to believe
Juice Factor: 9/10
It’s easy to steal the limelight in Canada and create media buzz around hype, and this Canadian marketing agency has certainly made a racket getting attention for their supposed accomplishments and expansions along the way. But things aren’t always as high-rolling and epic as they seem. All you have to do is look at their barely updated social media and one of the embarrassingly negative comments from a collaborator on their Facebook page before they get wind of this post and try to delete, delete, delete and update, update, update! Jeez.
Karl Lagerfeld’s new muse is…
Juice Factor: 8/10
Uncle Karl has a way with turning a fresh face into an instant icon overnight, which is clearly what’s about to happen to Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis’ daughter, Lily-Rose Depp. At Chanel’s casino-themed couture show in Paris, Lily-Rose walked arm-in-arm with actress Lily Collins, getting the couture stamp of approval and thus inevitable inclusion in upcoming issues of Vogue. That’s right – Lagerfeld had the who’s-who of the front row open the show instead of just looking pretty along the catwalk. Then, of course, modelling world it girl Kendall Jenner stole the actual show rocking a bob (a wig, but still) that made us kinda wish she’d chop off her long locks for real.
Other famous faces making a splash in Toronto
Juice Factor: 8/10
Hometown girl Caitlin Cronenberg showed us why it does a body good not to party as the notoriously straight-edge photographer rocked a casual black maxi dress walking along Queen West with a girlfriend on Monday. They popped into Urban Outfitters, making her seem all the more down-to-earth.
Men’s magazine favourite and Smallville actress Kristin Kreuk proved why she’s a perrenial favourite on “Sexiest Women Alive” lists hitting the 10 a.m. Misfit studio class on Sunday morning sporting an adorable cat tee. 10 a.m. on a Sunday? That’s some respectable willpower, gurl.

Meanwhile, Eugene Levy and his wife spent Monday afternoon at Soho House, taking time to debate the weather and whether or not the heat would be too much if they sat on the sunny patio. It’s rare that Hollywood makes us believe in true love, but the doting husband was pretty damn convincing. #HappyWifeHappyLife
