Over the past few years, Toronto’s music scene has gained the well deserved reputation of bringing hot new artists to the forefront of the music industry. It’s safe to say that there are many artists in and around the city that are exceptionally talented and definitely worth listening to. One of these artists in particular, one who truly does stand out, is R&B artist Shantel May.

Shantel May’s Work
This East End talent has already made a name for herself in Toronto’s music industry, however she hasn’t yet gained the proper recognition that her great potential demands she deserves. Shantel May has previously worked with OVO’s own R&B act, dvsn, on their track “… Again”, and can be seen featured on some of Spotify’s most popular R&B playlists like “Mood Ring” and “R&B Right Now”. Another notable Toronto and OVO artist that May has collaborated with is the producer of Drake’s “Hotline Bling” and PARTYNEXTDOOR’s “Not Nice”, Nineteen85.

Earlier this year, the Scarborough Songbird released her highly impressive and strikingly moving debut EP, “Don’t Let Them See You Cry”. This project features seven tracks that are centred around some very relatable romantic themes. The most popular track from the EP so far is the last, “Back n Forth”. Although you should definitely take the time to listen to the whole project, two notable songs that demand thorough listening are, “Until I Say So (feat.Westside Gunn)” and my personal favourite, “No Ratings”. After listening to all these catchy songs, it’s pretty clear that Shantel May’s music is inspired by the monumental R&B musicians of the late 90’s and early 00’s (more on that later).
If you somehow don’t believe the facts mentioned above, then maybe you need to hear from social media. On Twitter, users are commenting nothing but positive reactions and praise to “Don’t Let Them See You Cry”.
On the post announcing the EP drop, one fan writes, “been waiting on this one”, and another says, “Im onnn that #already”. On instagram, the post announcing the EP is flooded with praise. One user writes, “This goes super hard and you got a dope voice” and another says, “I have this entire EP on repeat”. So, it’s definitely safe to say that Shantel May’s EP is popular with listeners.
