There is a highly-anticipated restaurant coming to Toronto, and it’s opening just one month from now. Montecito is the creation of Ivan Reitman and Jonathan Waxman. If you are not familiar with these boys, Reitman is a Canadian producer and director (remember that movie Ghostbusters?) living in Montecito, California, and Waxman happens to be one of the best chefs and cookbook authors in America and owner of the famed Barbuto in NYC. Excited? We are, and we got a hard-hat sneak peek at the soon-to-open Toronto restaurant these boys have collaborated on.
Located at 299 Adelaide Street West, Montecito’s 12,000-square-foot space is smack dab in the heart of the city. Made up of an impressive two floors, two huge bars, a 60-seat patio, an open kitchen, and a private room on the second floor, you can expect Montecito to be one of the hottest new restaurants in Toronto.
We visited the space last Friday only to be even more impressed by the passion exuded by Waxman and Reitman. Design-wise, the space is inspired by all of Reitman’s favourite things, colours, textures, and fabrics. The space will boast the styles you would find in Reitman’s Montecito home, and impressively taking up most of the back wall is a massive video display that will play the view from Reitman’s backyard window, which he filmed and edited to reflect the beauty of Montecito. Pretty cool, non?
On the food side, Chef Waxman is a force to be reckoned with. Overly impressed with Toronto’s local food quality, he designed the entire menu is based around the best of Ontario. Waxman has hand-picked every supplier and will be changing the menu daily for both lunch and dinner. We do hope to see his famed roasted chicken as we hear it’s one of the best you’ll ever try.
Rumour has it Montecito will be opening in early July and will be open seven days a week from 10:30am to 2am.
