Toronto is on a restaurant roll. Yet another noteworthy opening to mention is SpeakEasy 21, a new resto-bar which opened a couple of weeks ago next door to The Trump Hotel on Adelaide Street. The new contemporary bistro offers guests custom crafted cocktails paired in harmony with the seasonal and fresh fare. Ideally located along the PATH, this 4,000 square foot space is one you might want to stop in and check out.
We passed by last week and were not disappointed. At the helm of the kitchen is Chef Andrew Wilson who was previously at Canoe, Colborne Lane and Origin North – so you can imagine how tasty the menu is. Half the menu items are shareables and include fun inventions like roasted cauliflower hummus (that cauliflower sure is the popular kid in school this year!), gouda wafers, and butter chicken balls, while also featuring more staple items like tacos and beef tartare.

While the menu is fun and easy to enjoy, the SpeakEasy 21’s libations will have you walking out with a definite buzz. With 45 cocktails on the list, they get creative and truly cater to every palate out there. The menu offers both traditional and inventive cocktails all made using their in-house fresh cold-pressed juices. We tried a couple (no really… just a couple), one of which was fantabulous: the Baja Sunrise made of Cazadores Tequila, Triple Sec, pineapple juice, and lime juice was magically shaken and the perfect drink after a hard day at the office.
The décor at SpeakEasy 21 is very representative of 1920s inspiration, with wood and leather accents throughout space, however the floor-to-ceiling windows do modernize the resto-bar, making it very appealing to anyone who’s been locked up in an office all day. Coming in late May is the huge 3,500 square foot patio that will not only consist of seating right on Adelaide – making people watching a sport – but also cabanas directly on the Adelaide sidewalk. A curious place to put private cabanas, we do look forward to seeing how that all unfolds. That said, with direct access from the PATH, SpeakEasy 21 is a great spot to go if you’re avoiding the cold.
As an added note, there will be weekly live music every Tuesday and Thursday, which we are quite excited about because Toronto needs more cool spots that offer live music.
