In VTV’s latest installment of “Talk Dirty to Me with Sara Starkman…” our relationship expert discusses tips on how you can spring clean your relationship!
Spring has finally sprung (not that you’d know it from looking outside, but still!). And we all know what happens when spring comes… spring cleaning! Don’t roll your eyes, I’m not talking about clothing culling or sweeping away the dust bunnies (but while we’re on that topic, you should probably do that too); I’m talking about spring cleaning in the bedroom – the best kind!
Winter (in Canada especially) is a tough time in all aspects of life. We tend to sleep more, cry more, eat more, work more, exercise less, have sex less, and just overall, do less. (Man, I hate winter!) But now that the dark and heavy months have slowly begun to dissipate, we can start to clear away the tubs of hot chocolate, the chunky knit sweaters, and the woolen blankets.
If you take a quick gander through your pajama drawer, you’re most likely going to find a number of sloppy pairs of sweatpants and flannel onesies which are essentially the anti-Christ when it comes to the bedroom. Now no one is saying to throw these away or light them on fire (as my mother continually suggests), but it’s definitely worth packing them into boxes for storage or donating them to a nearby charity. Don’t be too emotional about your soft and fuzzies, because once you pick up a pair of light cotton or silk jammies (or babydolls for the more adventurous) with style, you’ll be getting hot in a much more welcome type of way.
After the hot chocolate has seen its final days, it’s time to pack up the coffee and tea as well. Warm drinks are great year round, but in much lesser quantities. Try adding one extra bottle (buy recyclable or I’ll have to grab your plastic bottle and throw it at your head!) of water every day. This will help flush out toxins you’ve built up over the winter, make you feel fuller for longer and give you more energy (for cleaning or getting dirty… if you see what I’m sayin’).
Peruse through a deal-find site and nab a ten-class pass to a nearby kickboxing or dance class. Throw yourself into something new that will make you feel great and help you shed the winter blues and extra poundage, because we all know after that comes the reward of buying a couple of new flattering outfits to embrace new figures, new opportunities and sunny, sunny days.
If you’re attached, spring for some new sheets. It sounds silly, but the feeling and smell of new, freshly laundered (spring-themed) sheets can make a huge difference. Not only will you feel more excited about jumping into bed and wriggling under the covers (you know what happens after that), but it will connote an overall fresh start for the lighter, brighter, more sexually active months ahead.
Lastly, take a look in your box of sexual goodies (we know you have one) and see what you like, what doesn’t do it for you anymore, what needs to be cleaned, what needs to be refilled, and what’s missing. Spend an afternoon with your partner strolling to the nearest sex shop to find a new piece (maybe something in neon!) and get excited about spring.
