Checking out an intense boxing workout at Studio KO

VIBE Rating:

I was really excited about this one. I’ve done a couple box-fit or “boxercise” classes in the past and they were always such a good workout and a great way to sweat it out. For me, it was also a bit of therapy and a chance to let out any of life’s aggression – you know, in a healthy, productive way. I was lucky enough to get the master himself, DJ, as my trainer for the day. He was super nice, but a bit scary and ruthless if I’m being honest. I did, however, appreciate him pushing my body to limits I would never on my own at the gym.

Let me take you through the VIBE of Studio KO on King West to show you what you can expect from this high-intensity boxercise workout that is sure to get you feeling stronger and energized.

The Prep

Ready for Box-Fit

Checking In

First thing’s first when arriving at Studio KO – get your wraps and your gloves. They have boxing gloves for all levels and provide wraps as well. Both are on hand to purchase or if you just want to test it out, the glove rentals are included with your class. It’s easy to book online and you can pick the class and trainer that’s most convenient for you.

The Change Rooms + Amenities

They do have change rooms and lockers available to store your belongings, but generally people come in their gear and wraps, ready to throw down. I was at the morning class so everyone was generally in a hurry to get in, go hard and then get to work feelin’ fierce. Just make sure you’re ready to sweat.

They are fully equipped with all the amenities you need to change, shower and get ready for the day. But if you are in a hurry, then you’ll need to get to the showers quick as there is only 1 per bathroom – 2 in total. Most people don’t use them, but they’re private and equipped with all the necessary toiletries. There is a juice bar at the front to get your protein shake after, although a bit pricey. I personally got the Ginger protein shake which has ingredients to help your muscles build and keep you energized all day. It was delicious!

The Workout

The Instructor(s)

I trained with Master trainer, DJ who is very experienced in boxing and really pushes you to your limits. You hate him at the time, but thank him after (like all good trainers). You can tell he has a wealth of knowledge and experience in the game and boxing has been part of his whole life. I highly recommend him if you can get ’em.

The Intensity, Quality + Difficulty

As mentioned previously, the workout at Studio KO is quite intense. Not to say it was difficult, but it was challenging, yet so rewarding. You can join in at any level and something I noticed with most of these classes is it will always be uncomfortable at first as you learn the different punches and the proper form. Don’t let this discourage you from trying it out. The best way is to dive right in and try your best. There’s no judgment here and DJ or any trainer give the beginners and first-timers a little more attention to make sure you’re on the right track.

The Crowd + Community

The class was pretty busy, but not over-crowded. Everyone seemed to love going there and when asked, most people said they thoroughly enjoy the boxing component of the workout, the convenience of the location and the trainers dedication to pushing and providing a solid results-focused workout.

The Aftermath

You will leave here feeling strong and energetic. The soreness will kick in later in the day and you’ll wonder how the heck you got through that in one piece, but you will feel great and if it’s your first few times boxing, then you’ll definitely find yourself sore in new places from all the boxing movements. I highly recommend everyone, who is physically able, to incorporate boxing into their workout routine at least 1x per week. Studio KO is a great place to do that.
