Have summer indulgences taken their toll on you? Is it time to detox to get ready for the upcoming fall season? If you’re anything like me, you’re nodding yes. Problem is it’s not always easy to take “time off” your busy schedule to do a full summer detox, especially when you work crazy hours in the Financial District. But there are definitely some great options that are accessible to all of us to help “launch” a healthier lifestyle going into the new season.
That said, there is a very exciting new addition to the PATH’s Metro Centre. Yoga Be is the very first yoga studio to be operating under our feet and catering specifically to the working crowd. Don’t have time to exercise? This is an awesome way to use your lunch hour two or three times a week. Pack a healthy lunch and eat it at your desk after class or head to the healthy restaurant options in the PATH. Yoga may not seem like a hard workout, but you would be surprised what it can do to your body and your mind. Detox is not only about the body; the mind needs a clean-up and recharge too, and yoga will do that. Watch yourself get better at your job just from adding a weekly yoga ritual! Yoga Be even offers 20-minute “Better Than Coffee – Yoga Breaks” that can be done in your work clothes! Check here for the full class schedule!
There are a million ways to pay attention to food intake and change the way you eat, but it’s not always obvious if you work a hectic job and are grabbing take-out for lunch every day. Here’s what I say: Make a change! If you have no idea how to start, stop by Indigo Books in the Royal Bank Plaza one night after work. There are hundreds of books that can help get you started. I recently picked up a copy of A Change of Appetite by Diana Henry, who wrote this cookbook because she was going through exactly that: a change.
There are some amazing recipes that will keep you satisfied through the day and get you started on eating (and enjoying) lighter fare. You can also browse the health and well-being section to get even more inspiration, or find books that target a specific problem or goal you may have.
As for the healthy lunch options, if you didn’t bring lunch from home have no worries – you can still find some great options in the PATH. In the Metro Centre you will find a nice variety of restaurants that offer some fresh and healthy alternatives to burgers and fries. Booster Juice offers some delicious green smoothies if you’re going into that hardcore detox, or for a great salad or healthy soup there’s Soup Nutsy, Subway, and even Bacaro Italian Eatery. Eating healthy does not have to be difficult!
I have recently discovered that detoxing is not as scary or difficult to do as one would think. It’s about finding out what works for you and following that, because once you know you feel better and you just want to keep applying it to your life. It could just be a vitamin deficiency, a food sensitivity, or a need to add or remove something from your diet. If you’re not sure, head to Shoppers Drug Mart and speak to a pharmacist about what is going on and they can send you in the right direction. Trust me: Feeling and looking better tastes way better than that jelly donut you had for breakfast!
