Just like the ladies, this season’s warmth means an update is due for all the gents and their hairy winter headwarmers. We’ve done the dizzying search, and here are the top summer styles for men’s coifs…
Remember when Justin Timberlake had Shirley Temple-style ringlets with frosted tips? Neither do we. Fortunately for JT, a well-executed image makeover can do wonders for erasing the world’s memory of misguided style choices from the boy band era. Despite having extremely curly hair naturally, Justin has opted for a much shorter cut for his new Suit & Tie era aesthetic, which has dramatically reduced the volume of his mane. His hair still has its natural wave, but thanks to its short length, he can keep it under control with just a dime-sized dab of curl control cream. In all likelihood, JT is probably using a keratin treatment for extra control, but talk to your hairstylist about doing anything more drastic first.
The Great Gatsby Side Part
Maybe we have shows like Mad Men and Boardwalk Empire to thank, but now with The Great Gatsby hitting big screens, the old-fashioned slicked back look isn’t going anywhere, even in the warmer summer months. Start by using a styling cream or gel serum (not a straight-up gel) to give your hair the weight and hold of an old-fashioned oil but without the greasiness or the hardness of gel. Comb your hair into a side part. It should still feel soft enough to comb throughout the day. If you need a little bit more hold, opt for a dollop of clay pomade or soft molding paste to give it more shape, but be weary of any products that could lead to helmet head. You’re going for more Don Draper, less Jersey Shore.
Sure, this is a total ’90s throwback, but if it’s part of the reason why Channing Tatum was named “The Sexiest Man Alive” last year, then it’s worth a try. Besides, this cut is practical for summer given how low-maintenance it is. It’s merely a very short cut with a little bit of extra length in the front. You can work a bit of styling product into your hair at home for more lift, but be careful not to overdo it. Hugh Jackman often rocks a more sophisticated version of the peaked cut if you’re looking for more mature inspiration.
The Shaved Head
Dudes, it’s summer. Just shave that baby right off. If you’ve got weird scars on your head from an embarrassing childhood injury, just make up a cooler story and roll with it. If you were a Caesarian baby, show the world your perfectly shaped head with pride. If you’ve got a receding hairline, there’s no better time than now to see if you can go fully bald. Jason Statham would look 10 years older if he didn’t just shave it all off. Visit a barber for your first full shave and enjoy your newfound freedom. Throw out all your styling products and invest the one product you’re going to need from now on: SPF 30.
