MMA fighting and cannibalism together at last! The multi-talented Alain Chanoine stars in the world premiere of Evil Feed tonight at the Toronto After Dark Film Festival. The Montreal actor and stuntman definitely puts his killer skills to use in this highly anticipated action-meets-comedy-meets-gore flick about a Chinese restaurant that kidnaps MMA fighters from the street and makes them duke it out til the death gladiator style in the Pit of Gore before serving up the losers for dinner. It’s the anti-breakfast of champions; dinner of the defeated, if you will! We caught up with Chanoine to find out all about his fascinating career and what it takes to be a stuntman.
Tell us a bit about yourself. What should people know?
I’m an actor and a stunt performer. I was born and raised in Montreal, Canada, from Haitian heritage.
What is the craziest stunt you’ve ever done and what was it for?
It was on Punisher War Zone, the second one. I had to jump out of a four-storey building through an opaque window (so I was jumping blind) on fire, into an airbag. For a professional stunt fighter, that was a very challenging stunt.
What are the biggest challenges and best rewards about what you do?
Getting better at what I do. There’s nothing like landing a move you’ve been practicing for months or being terrified of a stunt – doing it for the first time and not be scared to do it again. In fact, most of the time, after the first time, I want to do it again. Bettering myself is the most rewarding part of my job. And the most challenging part is that we never do the same thing twice, which is great.
What are three things you can’t live without?
Family, art, action. With those three, my life is complete.
Finish this sentence: I love Montreal because…
…there is soul… You can be sitting at a coffee shop at 9pm on a Tuesday night and you can feel the vibe, the culture, the soul.
What’s your favourite restaurant and why?
I don’t really have a favourite restaurant, but I don’t really cook either. I love my Mom’s cooking, my girlfriend’s cooking and I love any restaurant that won’t let me cook. I love food though! When I go to a restaurant with my girlfriend, I don’t even open the menu. She chooses for me and she knows I’ll eat it because, like I said, I love food!
What’s your drink and where do you get it?
5-Star Rhum Barbancourt. It’s the best rum on the planet. Sometimes I can find it at the liquor store but most of the time I just harass anybody who’s going to Haiti to bring me back a couple bottles and they know they won’t ever hear the end of it if they don’t. The down side is that I’m the one bringing back 15 bottles when I go.
