For some of us, it’s just as important to have a psychic we trust as it is a good dentist or therapist. Not only does the supremely talented clairvoyant who goes by the name Ask Miki come from a carnival-traveling family with a long history of psychic powers, she’s been a fortune teller to the stars, touring with some of the biggest names in rock n’ roll history as their resident psychic and doing readings for some of music’s most iconic stars. Her beloved column, “Ask Miki,” has groupies all of its own, and we’re psyched that Miki has a reality show in the works right here in Toronto. That’s right, she’s based here. Looking to get a little insight on what the future holds? You can ask Miki yourself via her column or by scheduling a private reading. We caught up with Miki to find out about her exciting life and, of course, the future…
Tell us a bit about yourself. What should people know?
I come from 10 generations of psychic mediums, four of which are classed as professionals (which means we worked for money instead of swapping horses and food for the day). I started working at reading when I was 12 with my mother and grandmother, the most awesome women in my life who totally inspired me. I spent a good chunk of my life growing up in the carnival business with Conklin Shows, so I got to see a lot of life early – but it was fantastic and I’m still in touch with mostly all my carnival family. I would recommend that everyone grow up on a midway!

In 2003, I started to write the daily psychic advice column, “Ask Miki,” for Sun Media, which became nationally syndicated across Canada in the 24-hour newspapers and also won most popular column in the chain for 10 years in a row. I still write the column daily, and it’s now 11 years gone by in the blink of an eye. I live between Toronto, Wisconsin and Las Vegas (mostly Toronto at the moment). I’m just a rock n’ roll roadshow!
My hobbies that I’m into when I want to escape and chill are reading (currently the Game of Thrones series), knitting (sounds so granny), collecting carnival memorabilia, and traveling while disappearing into the hard rock tunes in my iPod. I had a best-selling book last year called Ask Miki Enchanted Collections, which was also a project that helped raise money for leukemia and lymphoma treatments (my mother died from leukemia). I have done more TV and fair/tour dates than The Rolling Stones. Most recently, I did a reality series called Deals from the Darkside as a psychic investigator, and I have my own paranormal show in development this year called Simply Paranormal.
Your psychic abilities have been sought out by iconic stars, and you’ve even gone on the road with huge bands. Who are some of the big names you’ve done readings for and toured with?
I do readings for people from all walks of life, from struggling students, housewives and businesspeople to celebrities, rock bands and world famous groupies. My world and my business is based on accuracy and confidentiality, so much like with Vegas, what’s said at Miki’s reading table stays at Miki’s reading table. I met a lot of musicians by being the psychic for rock radio stations. What really put me on the map was when I predicted that Queen would be a huge success after hearing them in England when they did not yet have air play in North America – the same with David Bowie.
What are some of the biggest misconceptions about psychics?
The biggest misconception about people in my industry is that we are all gypsies and thieves and you can become a psychic if you take a course or learn to read cards. Real psychic mediums are born this way. I always say I am a freak of nature with a double dose of intuition and this gift isn’t always a party. How would you like to come home and know that someone in your house is about to die? Not as much fun as having the edge on knowing if your boyfriend is cheating, now is it…?

How does a reading work for you? What do you need or need to do to see a person’s future?
I am what they call a grand scale clairvoyant, which basically means I get messages from many different sources, for example: visions; voices from the spirit world; seeing an apparition or ghost who brings the message; psychometry (which is touching an object or photo to gather information); and sometimes psychic tools like tarot cards or a crystal ball. All you need to do is sit down in front of me, call me on the phone, or write me an email and I’ve got your vibe!
When you’re not doing readings, can you – for lack of a better term – turn-off being psychic? Or do you always tend to see the future of those around you?
I can turn off the Miki intuition satellite when I’m not working for simple day-to-day things like other people’s love lives and job situations, etc. But if it’s an urgent warning like illness, death, an accident, or a spirit entering the place where I am, it can’t be ignored. I call it the woodpecker that keeps banging on the door to my brain until I answer it. I’ve had ghosts show up in restaurants that I’m eating at between the salad and the entrée and sometimes it can be draining… but I’ve also saved some lives by forewarning people of impending life-altering threats on the flip side.
When did you first know you were a psychic? Tell us that story…
My first psychic experience was when I saw a ghost at 6 years of age with my grandmother who was watching me while my Mom was reading a customer in their reading studio. I ran to my grandmother screeching, “Grandma, Grandma, I saw a ghost!” She replied by saying, “Well Miki, go ask it what it wants. It’s only a person of another kind. We see lots of them in this house. It’s just what we do.” I could feel the blood draining out of my head and wanted to faint. Needless to say, I didn’t go back and ask. It was hard growing up different and sometimes other kids stayed away. It can be very scary and hard to cope with as a child – seeing and hearing things that no one else can. But I became very popular as a teenager because I knew what everyone’s boyfriend was up to and what was coming on the next exam in high school.
You’ve got a TV show in the works. What’s it about?
I have my own paranormal show in development this year called Simply Paranormal. All I can tell you at this moment is that it’s not your typical psychic show. I’ll be doing a lot of things that others haven’t done before on TV. I have an awesome motley crew of a cast, and I’m really looking forward to it. I’ll be sure to keep you posted as things progress in the near future.
