Already known throughout the fashion world for her sharp tailoring and architectural details, Caitlin Power makes us feel kinda bad about ourselves given that she’s only 25 years-old and already showing her designs at World MasterCard Fashion Week. The Calgary native will rock #WMCFW once again today when her Spring/Summer 2014 collection from her self-titled womenswear label debuts on the runway. We caught up with the designer before the big show to find out more about her exciting career and her inspirations and obsessions…
Tell us a bit about yourself. What should people know?
I’m 25 and originally from Calgary. I grew up playing hockey and started sewing in Grade 5. My designs are created with this sort of supernatural power woman I have in my mind. My goal is to create collections that make women feel like the best version of themselves; confident and powerful, ready to take on the world!
What are the biggest challenges and best rewards about what you do?
You’re in the public eye all the time, so people will develop their own opinions and judgments about what you do. You have to absorb the relevant information but make sure you stay true to your vision and your brand. I design for the modern day career woman. When I see her in Caitlin Power I feel a great sense of accomplishment.
What are three things you can’t live without?
My Chapstick, my cell phone and my family.
Finish this sentence: I love Toronto because…
…of the culture. It’s such a creative, artistic city. There’s always something happening in Toronto; it’s very inspiring as a designer.
What’s your favourite restaurant and why?
I love the chicken and waffles at Harlem Underground – they never disappoint.
What’s one of your favourite go-to designers/brands or accessories lines and why do you sport their fashions?
I try to wear my own designs for most of my staples and stand-out pieces. My go-to denim brand is J Brand; they’re great quality and flatter all the right places!
What products are always in your beauty/grooming bag?
MAC Lipsticks! I always have a bold lip colour on; it’s a great finishing touch to any look.
What style trends are you obsessed with right now?
I’m usually more drawn to classic silhouettes but I do love the midi length skirts, which are very “now.”
What’s your favourite spa or service?
Definitely facials!
Let’s get social for a mo’. How can people stay up-to-date with your busy life?
I’m very active on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. The company accounts will give you an inside scoop as to what happens on a day-to-day basis. Say “Hi!”
