The beautiful and talented Florence K had our attention the moment she called her latest album I’m Leaving You, out this month on Universal. We love a girl who can make heartache sound oh-so good. The Montreal singer-songwriter will be performing at First Canadian Place today, October 22nd, at 12:15pm, debuting songs from her new album. We caught up with Florence K before the big event to find out more about her fascinating career in music and her current obsessions.
Tell us a bit about yourself. What should people know?
I’m a passionate musician. I live and breathe music. I love my job so much. I’m so happy to have my new album I’m Leaving You out. It was written over a year, mostly in LA, with producer Larry Klein, and it’s my most personal album ever. Two years ago, I went through a very difficult time and I wrote the record right afterwards, as I was rebuilding and getting better. The result is that all the songs come straight from my heart, that it talks about deep subjects, but that it’s all done in an uplifting way, making it an album that’s the opposite of dark.

What are the biggest challenges and best rewards about what you do?
The biggest challenge to me is to keep renewing myself, and to keep learning every day about music, to feel like when I go to bed, I’m a better musician than when I woke up! The best reward is when someone tells me that one of my songs or a concert helped them to get through something, that it moved them or that it made them feel good!
What are three things you can’t live without?
In terms of things (not people!), it would be: my yoga mat, my iPhone, and my mascara!
Finish this sentence: I love Toronto because…
…I always discover something new there, because walking by the lake is an awesome feeling, and because people are always so welcoming to me!
What’s your favourite restaurant and why?
Le Sélect Bistro on Wellington – it’s the best French bistro in town! I love the owners, the staff, the decoration, and their risotto!

What’s one of your favourite go-to designers/brands or accessories lines and why do you sport their fashions?
I’m lucky because Chanel dresses me now. I love the fact that their stuff is timeless, classic, classy, and international. I also am a big, big fan of the Karma yoga clothes.
What products are always in your beauty/grooming bag?
The Nuxe dry oil. It does the job for everything. Removing makeup, hydration for the hair, for the face, the body, everything. I also always have a small spray bottle of Chanel No. 5 perfume, and a lipstick (No. 53 from Chanel) and mascara. Hand cream by Neutrogena also is a must in the cold season.
What style trends are you obsessed with right now?
I’m absolutely obsessed with skirts right now. I decided that for years I was so uncomfortable wearing jeans because I couldn’t move as much as I wanted too! So yesterday I made the decision to always wear skirts with tights or leggings. I feel so much more free and I can practice my yoga everywhere (jeans are too tight for that)!
What’s your favourite spa or service?
I love hammams, the traditional Moroccan spas where you go in a steam bath and you get washed and exfoliated with bindi (Moroccan) soap. It just is a huge skin makeover.
Let’s get social for a mo’. How can people stay up-to-date with your busy life?
I’m a Twitter girl. It’s so easy, so short and sweet and I love posting pics of my tours and trips. I’m also on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube.
