Nothing says “most likely to succeed” quite like a girl who works her way through school. When the incredibly hard-working, impressively talented, and delightfully creative Jessica Huang isn’t working towards finishing her Business Management Degree at Ryerson University right here in Toronto, you can find the success story in the making doing some of the most innovative manicures (her specialty is stamping nail art) at Wow Wow Nails. We caught up with Huang to find out more about her busy life, favourite restaurants, nail trends and polishes, and more…
Tell us a bit about yourself. What should people know?
My name is Jessica Huang. I am an undergraduate student at Ryerson University majoring in Business Management. When I’m not in school, I’m at my part-time job at Wow Wow Nails as a nail artist who specializes in stamping nail art for clients. Aside from school and work, I love to travel and experience new cultures, and I love food. So far this year I’ve been to China, Hong Kong, and New York.
As a nail artist, what have been some of the most innovative things you’ve painted on customers’ nails?
Clients come to me with pictures of the designs they want, but when I show them stamping nail art they get amazed by the hundreds of designs they can choose for their nails. The most innovative designs I’ve done so far have been ombré nails with tropical nail art designs.
Do you have favourite brands of nail polish and if so why?
I used to love wearing OPI nail polishes, but currently I am obsessed with CND Shellac Pink Bikini, Red Lobster, and Wildfire. Also, I really like the Gel II Reaction colours Tequila Sunset (a peachy red colour) and Pink Paradise (a pink-to-dark red colour). Yes, I love my pinks and reds!
What are your favourite nail trends of the moment?
My favourite nail trends come from Pinterest, Instagram, and Wow Wow Nails’ website gallery. So far the trends I like are square-shaped nails with the ombré look, the half-moon nails with sparkles/glitter, and geometric nail designs.
What do you think some of the next big nail trends will be?
This summer I am seeing a lot of half-moon nail designs and reverse French tips, but the next big nail trend might be geometric nails. They look pretty and are just a little on the funkier side.
What’s always in your beauty bag?
Lip balm and hand cream of course! I can never have chapped lips. No one wants to kiss chapped lips! And I need hand cream because my hands needs to be feeling moisturized and soft at all times.
What’s your favourite restaurant and why?
I love all types of cuisine and I am not a picky eater. I love food, but Japanese, Vietnamese, and Chinese cuisines are my favourite. The best sushi restaurants I’ve been to are Fushimi on Church Street (they have the best salmon tartar) and New Generation on Bloor Street. As for Vietnamese food, I like to go to Pho Phoenix on College Street for rice paper dishes and Celebrity Hotpot on Spadina Avenue for all you can eat.
