Independent business woman, entrepreneur, beauty aficionado and enthusiast – JJ Cowan is a bona fide beauty fiend whose big dreams have manifested into a fledgeling career. How did she get there? What makes her unique? Read on and find out…
Tell us a bit about yourself. What should people know?
I’m a diehard beauty and skin care addict! I’m an eyelash extension and waxing specialist, and my company is The Forma Group. (As I own it. *smirk*)
How did you get interested in the world of beauty?
I get asked this question a lot and I don’t want to sound repetitive, but it’s hard because I’ve been obsessed with beauty and esthetics forever, simple as that!
I remember my mother would give me my allowance when I was younger and my first stop would be Shoppers Drug Mart. I would literally spend the entire afternoon checking out products, what was new, what did what, and I would ask the sales staff tons of questions – then I would select a product that I felt was worthy of my $20.00 allowance, purchase it and try it out in every way possible. I believe that this simple act laid the foundation for my self-taught education in beauty; knowledge that has proven priceless. It really became my thing and I knew the staff by name! I went on to complete two degrees in non-beauty affiliated fields only to enter the beauty industry years later as an eyelash extension and waxing specialist. My passion for beauty that I developed at a young age gave me the tools to persevere when learning my new skill set and I’ve never been happier. I literally get paid to play!
What’s your beauty must-have?
Toner! It’s a must for everyone really and I think that most people don’t understand its importance to maintaining the pH balance of your skin, as well as it is essential prior to moisturizing because it allows the product to easily absorb into the skin. Those with minor acne breakouts could really benefit from the use of a toner. Trust me, it’s what will leave your skin dewy – not the moisturizer on its own.
What beauty/style trends are you excited for this year?
I am loving the idea of a side placed Fish Tail Braid on a really hot summer day. The thought of having a messy side braid coupled with loose pants and top is so romantic to me, and God could you image it with sunglasses?! Chic!
What’s your favourite spa or service?
I love SweetGrass Spa. It’s really my favourite in the city because it’s a women’s only spa and the service and services are top of the line. I love getting a custom Oxygen Facial from Lourdes; she really knows her stuff and it really is an experience.
What’s the one – yes, just one – product you can’t live without?
Creme De Le Mer. I absolutely cannot and will not live without this! It’s a petroleum based product which makes it a great eye cream and it literally dissolves the fine lines around your eyes. Trust me, its not just celebrity (J Lo) hype, it really lives up to its reputation.
If you were a nail polish, your colour name would be?
Hmm, this is a tough question as I’ve been obsessed with polish since Lauren Conrad busted out OPI’s Lincoln Park After Dark on The Hills years ago. I love Essie for the brand’s ability to come up with polish that really does stay innovative in regards to colours and names. But as for me and what I would be named if I was actually a polish, I would have to say Morning Spry and I’d be soft pink with a shimmer and you’d only need one coat because I made that much of an impression!
Favourite beauty/style ad campaign of the past decade.
Anything and everything Chanel!
Let’s get social for a mo’. How can people stay up-to-date of your primping and pampering?
Check out the beauty section of my blog. I talk about a variety of beauty topics, or you can check out my company website where I’m adding new services regularly. Believe me, if I endorse it, it’s good!
