Matthew Morgan is a Southern boy turned Toronto transplant who spends his days casting talent for the big screen – like the latest James Franco gem, As I Lay Dying, that just debuted at Cannes – television, print advertising, and pretty much anything else that requires fresh faces in media’s many spaces. Though this Casting Director splits his time between Toronto, New Orleans, and Mississippi, he still knows where to get a kick-ass Caesar in our humble metropolis. Let’s find out more about Matthew Morgan…
Give us a snippet about you. What should people know?
I am Mississippi born, a proud Southerner, and also a proud Canadian as well. I run my own casting company, Morgan Casting Inc, with offices in Toronto, New Orleans and Mississippi. I love humility, gratitude and determination – and think these attributes have been my keys to success. I love American football, Canadian music and arts, and speak fluent French, Spanish and English. Those who know me say I never stop and am always go-go-go! I love new challenges, constantly learning, and taking risks in life. There’s no better way to be, eh?
Finish this sentence: I love Toronto because…
…it gives me the freedom and refuge to truly be me. There’s no other city where I can express myself to my fullest and highest potential with little to no hesitation. For that alone, Toronto is my rock!
What are three things you simply cannot live without?
Let’s be realistic: my iPhone as I can practically run my business from it alone – it’s got just about everything I need and then some; Cheese, fromage, queso, formaggio… Okay, I have to indulge in something I love – I think I may have been a cheesemonger in the Basque country or Provence in a former life; Books… I read books on cheese to fall asleep at night.
What’s your favourite restaurant and why?
I love Gio Rana’s Really Really Nice Restaurant in Leslieville. I have never felt so warm and welcomed in a restaurant. Customers feel like family. It seems like I’m headed to my mom’s for a yummy, home cooked meal. Amazing food, impeccable service, and such a fantastic family at it’s helm. Trust me – it’s that good!
What’s your favourite drink/cocktail and where do you go to get it?
I love a Caesar! Go to Cherry Cola’s Rock N Rolla Cabaret and Lounge and ask for Michelle Grimaldi! She puts so much love in her Caesars – and even brings in her own personal ingredients from home to make sure her patrons and clients are well taken care of! Off the charts delicioso! “Mint!” Grimaldi would say. Trust me, Toronto’s finest. And her dirty marts (that’s martinis, BTW) are insane! I repeat: Grimaldi. Cherry Cola’s. Done and done! You might just have the best cocktail in town and learn a few new words, too. Grimalidisms!
Who’s your favourite designer/brand and why do you sport their fashions?
I love a real mix of brands and designers… from Philip Sparks to J.Crew to Club Monaco to m0851 (best leather on earth)! I love mixing and matching old with new; vintage with current… Plus, I love a little Value Village excursion from time to time. You just never know!
Let’s get social for a mo’. How can people stay up-to-date with all your city-trotting?
Well, I trot in a few cities regularly, so the best way to see where I’m shopping, working and eating is via Twitter, my biz Twitter, or my biz Facebook.
