We love a girl who can write! Not only is Sheena Lyonnais is the managing editor of Yonge Street Media, as well as a freelance writer for Vice, Torontoist, The Grid and THIS magazine, she’s also the founder of the online publication, Blonde Mag. We caught up with Lyonnais to find out what keeps her passionate and where she spends her downtime in Toronto.
Tell us a bit about yourself. What should people know?
I am the managing editor of Yonge Street Media and I freelance writer for Vice, Torontoist, The Grid, THIS magazine and any other publication that I can get my hands on. I started in music journalism and still run a blog about it, but these days I’m passionate about truly original innovation and stories that explore deeper issues. I recently started an online magazine called Blonde Mag and although it’s in the early stages, my hope is that one day it will be a go-to place for women who appreciate raw, honest and edgy writing. Right now we’ve got editors in Toronto, Calgary and Montreal so things are starting to happen.
What are three things you can’t live without?
My Blackberry, my record player, and good company.
Finish this sentence: I love Toronto because…
Toronto’s got those small town feels but big city vibes, which makes it a perfect place for me. Whether I want to escape to a little coffee shop that knows just how I take my cortados, or take in city views at the rooftop of the Thompson Hotel, there’s always something inspiring and creative going on. Plus, you can lounge away your days at Toronto’s various parks (Trinity Bellwoods and Christie Pitts are my faves) and lose your nights to live music any time of the week.
What’s your favourite restaurant and why?
Going to have to say Southern Accent for this one. This New Orleans themed restaurant on Markham Street has been a staple in my life since I moved downtown in university. It’s kitchy, but cool, a totally unique space that makes amazing whiskey sours and has the friendliest staff around. They also have fortune tellers! I once even tried alligator there (it tasted like chicken).
What is currently on your iPod?
I literally can’t stop spinning Jagwar Ma. It was a little excessive already, and then I saw them perform at the Hoxton and now I truly can’t get enough. I commute to it, I write to it, I dance to it. Howlin is basically the soundtrack to my life right now.
What products are always your beauty/grooming bag?
Red lipstick, always. I alternate between Russian Red by Mac and Kate Moss’s shade 01 for Rimmel. You can always find black eyeliner and gold eye shadow in my purse, but when it comes to the cabinet I’m all about matting powder (a girl’s got to get that volume somehow!) and my curling wand, which is possibly the greatest beauty item I’ve ever purchased.
