Blame it on our teenage obsession with Lilith Fair, but there’s still nothing cooler to us than a girl who writes, sings and plays her own music. Meet Allison Dunnings, the one woman show behind Future Husbands. Though you’ve heard her voice a thousand times before on albums from other big-name music industry vets, Future Husbands is Dunnings’ first big attempt at going solo as a singer-songwriter. She’s been writing songs since the tender age of 14 when the rest of us were busy lip-syncing to the entire Jagged Little Pill album and dramatically mourning the death of Kurt Cobain. We caught up with Dunnings to find out what’s currently on her iPod and what she loves most about Toronto.
Give us a snippet about you. What should people know?
I’m a singer songwriter in the midst of launching a new project under the moniker Future Husbands. Beyond that, I’m a bit of a Jill of all trades. I do social media for Fresh Collective, a fabulous series of boutiques that features local Toronto designers. I also design jewelry, tend bar, dream big and play hard.
Finish this sentence: I love Toronto because…
…you can always find something to do – great shopping, great restaurants, great culture and great live music.
What’s your favourite restaurant and why?
I love Nirvana on Bathurst and College. There’s something for everyone on the menu, their brunch is delish (eggs florentine, every time) and the price is right – cheap and cheerful!
What’s your favourite drink/cocktail and where do you go to get it?
I’m generally one for a nice pint of Blanche de Chambly, but I recently fell for the “Fresh Material” at Hawker Bar on Ossington: gin, cucumber, mint, lime and soda – the perfect summer refreshment!
Who’s your favourite designer/brand and why do you sport their fashions?
I’m a vintage gal, but as far as modern designs go I love to support local talent. Rita Di Cesare and Address Apparel are two locally designed lines that I adore. They both have simple designs in classic cuts and a touch of edge to them. I’m also obsessed with Yoga Jeans from Second Denim. Their fit is amazing. (All three designers are available at Fresh Collective, of course!)
What is your current “most played song” on your iPod?
I listen to most of my music on rdio these days so I can’t be sure, but I would hazard a guess it’s “Hollywood Cemetery Forever Sings” by Father John Misty. I can’t get enough of the “Fear Fun” record.
