Originally from Japan, Steve Taniguchi has been gaining quite the following since bringing his modern approach to hairstyling to Toronto at SeeFu Hair Salon on Spadina. With SeeFu now opening its second location, SeeFu Yorkville, Taniguchi is moving north to bring his cutting-edge hairstyling techniques to Cumberland Street. We caught up with him to find out more.
What hairstyles are you best known for creating?
I like old school or avant-garde – the extremes.
Any celebrity’s style you like in particular?
Yusaku Matsuda. He’s cool from head-to-toe.
Do you have any favourite hair products?
I really like John Masters Organic sea salt spray for hair. It creates a gorgeous natural wave and cool texture.
What’s your favourite city in the world for hairstyles?
Toronto actually has very good style. Tokyo is very trendy, but Toronto is very easy-going yet stylish.
Who is your favourite fashion designer?
I am always a fan of Comme des Garçons.
What’s your favourite TV show?
Just for Laughs. I love a good gag.
Do you have any interesting or surprising hobbies outside of hairstyling?
Rakugo. It’s a Japanese form of comedy.
What’s your personal style?
I take the best of different retro styles and eras and concoct my own style out of them. I think it’s important to make your own identity in all forms of fashion — be it clothes, hair, home furnishings, etc.
