Unlike its sister holiday for debauchery (New Year’s Eve, we mean), St. Patrick’s Day is all about being able to spread your energy and financial resources across the entire day. As opposed to blowing all your money at once on cover, bottle service, and $12 shots of Jager, St. Patty’s usually involves a steady marathon of day drinking beginning before noon and lasting well into the evening. Besides taking an afternoon nap and eating grease profusely, the best thing you can do for yourself is to go places that won’t bleed you dry by the ounce. That’s why your economically minded drinking buddies at View the Vibe have rounded up all the best places to score St. Patrick’s Day 2014 deals in Toronto…
An Sibin Pub
Our favourite flavour of the Emerald Isles in Leslieville, An Sibin Pub will be hosting a whole weekend of deals for St Patrick’s Day. Black Friday (March 14th) will include $6 Guinness, $3 Jager and Jameson shots, and $5 Black Irish Cocktails (like a Black Russian except luckier). In true Irish spirit (er… spirits?) Saturday, Sunday and St. Patrick’s Day Monday will feature $3.54 Jameson shots. Also, there’ll be live music all weekend to keep the Gaelic vibe alive.
Grace O’Malley’s runs a Monday night deal of 1 pound of wings for $2 following the purchase of a drink from 5pm until close. Given that you’ll most likely be purchasing a drink on St. Patrick’s Day, it’s safe to say you’ll be able to enjoy this deal.
One of the city’s most dependable Irish pubs, Whelan’s Gate almost always has St. Patrick’s Day special menu additions along with nachos and wings. Always remember: When day drinking, it’s smart to do a little day eating as well.
Trapped downtown and can’t find an Irish pub that isn’t already stuffed to the brim with your fellow merry men or women? Wide Open (at Queen and Spadina) is a favourite among the downtown dive bar crowd (read: slightly hipster) and features Monday night specials of half-price drinks and $12 pitchers until midnight. Isn’t Ireland everywhere on St. Patrick’s Day, anyway?
Rally Sports Bar and Smokehouse
Rally Sports Bar and Smokehouse in East York is the perfect spot for you and the entire clan to celebrate your Irish roots (note: Irish heritage not actually required). They’ll be throwing a huge bash featuring promotional drinks including Irish Car bombs, Irish-inspired cocktails, Black Velvets, green beer, and some additions to the menu taken straight from the Emerald Isle. The festivities will last the whole St. Patrick’s Day weekend, though on the day-of there’ll also be Irish dancers and live music to keep the Gaelic vibe pumping!
St. Patrick’s Day Pub Crawl
While not a St. Patrick’s Day drink deal per se, the St Patty’s Day Pub Crawl grants you access to three of Toronto’s most bumpin’ clubs and bars (Gravity Soundbar, Crocodile Rock, and Tequila Jacks) without having to pay cover, and you get to skip the line. Saving money on cover equals more drinks, FYI.
Brazen Head Irish Pub
Another dependable Irish pub in Toronto, the Brazen Head Irish Pub usually does a St. Patrick’s Day customer appreciation appetizer deal. Having a few St. Paddy’s Days under our belts, we’re sure the customers appreciate it as well.
Firkin on Yonge
Though Firkin on Yonge may be a mostly Brit-style pub, they’ll be crossing the Irish Sea to the Emerald Isle for St. Patrick’s Day weekend! They’ll be serving Gaelic fare including St. James Gate Sliders, Dublin Spuds, Blarney Stone Burgers, and of course, Traditional Irish Stew. On the drinks side (aka what you all were waiting for) they’ll have deals on Bushmill’s Irish Whiskey shots and Dublin Drop Shots. Best to have some of those sliders before taking too many drop shots, laddie, or you’ll be the one dropping at 6pm.
The Roy Public House will be mercifully offering wings for $6 with the purchase of a beverage on St. Patrick’s Day. While potatoes and stew may be normally associated with Irish cuisine, it’s safe to say that for one day of the year their national dish comes in your choice of mild, medium, or spicy.
You always know you can hook yourself a good time at the Happy Hooker and St Patrick’s Day is no exception. Our favourite seafood spot on Dundas West will be celebrating with $2 fish ‘n chips, $5 pints, and $4 Jameson all day on St Patty’s Day. Make sure to eat lots before too many of those Jameson shots have you feeling “sea sick.”
The Drake Hotel
The Drake Hotel is probably not the first place you’d think of when it comes to St. Patrick’s Day, but this hotbed of culture will be hosting a fab event for the frugal. They’ll be hosting a St. Patrick’s Day Party with Beau’s + Rodney Dangerfield. Get your green drank on with samples from Beau’s and then some equally green bites from Rodney Dangerfield. The event, hosted by Ivy Knight, will also include a cook-off and a chance to create art.
Staying home and hosting your own party? Save tons, drink more, and pass out in your own bathroom.
