It’s incredible to think that a small three pound organ is the essence of what makes you, you.The organ we’re talking about? Our brains of course! Vv Magazine’s Aly Zorn was live in action to catch the unveiling of an amazing health initiative concerning one of our most important organs, the Brain Project.
Better than any state of the art computer, our brains get sh*t done, however, we often take them for granted. Unlike a computer, we can’t replace or upgrade our brains with the latest software, hot off the assembly line, which is where the Brain Project comes in.
Telus has recently joined forces with University of Toronto affiliated Baycrest Health Sciences, a global leader in brain health and aging, to present The Brain Project. The initiative will serve as a vehicle that raises awareness and funds for brain health and research using public art as a platform.
Beginning June 3rd, there will be 100 brain sculptures displayed across Toronto at venues like Nathan Philips Square, MaRS Discovery District, OCAD and more. Each sculpture has been customized by Canadian and international artists. With our brains being the epicentre of creativity, we can’t think of a more fitting theme – art on brains, created by brains (think about it)!
“The Brain Project is going to be an incredible installation: so many different forms of expression on display in the streets of Toronto. The connection between art and brain health is a fascinating topic…” said Mr. Brainwash, one of the artists participating in the the Brain Project.
The first sculpture was unveiled earlier this month by Mayor John Tory at Nathan Phillips Square. Designed by artist Gary Taxali, inspiration came from wanting to create awareness of brain disease, specifically alzheimer’s disease, to the public in a stimulating way.
Other artists joining Taxali and Mr. Brainwash include Karim Rashid, Muse’s Matthew Bellamy, Kim Kardashian West and daughter North West, Bobbie Burgers, David Drebin, Uno Hoffmann, Darlene Cole and more.
