With the arrival of sunny skies and warm weather to the city this past weekend, Toronto seems to be returning to its lively self. The offer of huge $5 chicken sandwiches didn’t hurt matters either. The Heartbreak Chef took advantage of the city’s sunny disposition on Saturday and raised proceeds for the Parkdale Foodbank, an event that had hundreds lining up for the massive fried chicken sandwiches.
Crowds of people flocked to the Dundas West restaurant on March 20 to get their hands on a sandwich. Some fried chicken fans even brought lawn chairs to wait out their turn at getting a $5 Big Ass Sandwich (that’s literally what they’re called). The beloved comfort food joint also offered their popular chicken dutty sandwich at just $5 a pop. The fried chicken is tossed in an extra hot jerk sauce and topped with grilled pineapple and creamy slaw to create the masterpiece that is the dutty chicken sandwich. While these big sammies usually cost $12, The Heartbreak Chef dropped the price for one day only to raise funds for the Parkdale Community Food Bank, in celebration of the restaurant’s one-year anniversary.
Chef Jerome Robinson didn’t stop at just the two sandwiches in an effort to bring out as many community members as possible. Saturday saw the return of the special fried chicken sandwich on a donut created earlier this year in partnership with Glory Hole Donuts. And if that wasn’t enticing enough, The Heartbreak Chef was also serving up a limited quantity of their mouthwatering ice cream sandwiches. It really makes us think that the wait of upwards of 2 hours to order these sandwiches was worth it and then some.
