Reality bites. You’re no longer your nineteen-year-old self and you definitely don’t have her drinking tolerance either. Those Sunday morning wake-ups are not the carefree times they once were. Now you have to spend the entire day watching Netflix, hooked up to an IV of water in order to withstand any form of conversation. So how do you have your fun and drink it too? View The Vibe‘s post-party detox guide, that’s how.
Here are some tips and tricks to treat the hangover blues so you can bounce back and be ready just in time for tonight’s wild night out.
Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
You’ve heard this one a thousand times. But that’s only because it’s true. Pairing drinking, obnoxious drunk dancing, and 2 hours of sleep is a surefire recipe for dehydration. So grab yourself some water, and lots of it. Or if you’re feeling fancy, try coconut water.
Moisturize Your Skin
After a weekend of partaying, you’re going to be pretty dehydrated and the first place it’ll show up is your skin. Try doing a soothing castor oil cleanse to bring out all the impurities and bring back all the moisture. When castor oil is absorbed through your skin, your lymphocyte count (the cells that help you fight off disease and toxins) increases. This speedy increase in the removal of toxins from your tissue promotes healing. For an extra protective measure, try some tea tree oil when the first signs of a nasty blemish surface. You’ll be looking bright and ready for round 2 in no time.
Take Care of That Hangover Headache
While it may be your first instinct to pop a couple Advil after a night out on the town, you should probably refrain from doing so. Advil’s known to damage your kidneys and liver with prolonged usage so it’s definitely not the best thing to mix with alcohol. Instead, opt for some peppermint oil. Simply rub it directly on your temples and you’ll be ready to relax. Its cooling and anti-inflammatory properties are known to produce soothing effects. In fact, breathing in boiling water with a few drops of peppermint extract can eliminate the effects of nausea and motion sickness.
Get Rid of The Bloat
Contrary to popular belief, gas is not always the culprit of bloating – sometimes it’s sodium. And if beer and cocktails are your drinks of choice, you’ve just ingested a lot of sodium. Fear not! Potassium can help counteract the sodium levels in your body. Try adding some banana to your morning oatmeal to balance out that bloat.
Sleeeeeeeeep
You’ve been out ’til 4 in the morning, danced the night away and you’ve eaten an entire pizza single-handedly. You need some rest and relaxation. Get your daily dose of 8 hours of uninterrupted z’s on a comfy bed (your friend’s kitchen floor doesn’t count) and you’ll be well on your way to being a functioning human in society again. Try using this sleep cycle calculator to ensure you dive fully into that REM sleep you need, and you’re bound to wake up feeling refreshed!
Start Working On Your Fitness
That’s right, it’s time to channel your inner Fergie. Yes, you’re tired. And yes, your whole body probably feels like it’s been stomped on by a parade of sweaty dancers (and maybe it actually has), but you’ve got to do this. Sweat out your hangover and get the fitness party going. It doesn’t have to be pumpin’ iron, but try to pick something that’s a reasonably high intensity. You’ll thank us later. Just be sure to re-energize with a high carb post-workout snack, like some fruit. And keep water handy to make sure your thirst stays quenched!
Get That Digestion Going
If you’ve been livin’ it up in the city, chances are you’ve probably been feasting on an array of McDonald’s, pizza, and Kraft Dinner. Which is probably why you don’t feel the greatest right now. That’s where congee comes in. It’s a type of rice porridge in many Asian cultures that’s definitely bound to soothe your soul and aid in digestion. Check out this recipe to make your own cozy bowl of congee.
