As our dating lives continue to move online, we’ve also provided researchers with ample data to analyze 21st century dating trends. More of us might be having casual sex these days, but you’ll never guess what question predicts who’s having the most of it. Hint: alcohol is involved…
Once upon a time, sex on the first date was a social taboo. Yes, millennials, long before you could court someone using just your thumbs and an iPhone, first date hookups usually signified you’d just sabotaged a potential relationship to have a sexily sinful one-night stand.
These days, jumping the gun on gettin’ some doesn’t have to mean pulling the plug on true romance before it’s even begun. Traditional mating rituals are so pre-Tinder anyway. As the dating app quickly replaces the one-time mutual friend matchmaker in our romantic lives, the rules of dating have changed with it. Getting hot and heavy doesn’t have to wait until date No. 3 or until you both agree to be “in a relationship” on Facebook. If you’re feeling frisky on a first date and you think the feeling is mutual, go for it…. But, wait — there’s no app for reading minds on the market just yet. So how do you know if you should make a move? It’s simple. With one question: Just ask your date if he/she likes the taste of beer.

That’s right. According to Christian Rudder, a Harvard grad with a degree in mathematics who also happens cofounder of a dating site OKCupid, people who like beer — be they male or female, gay or straight — are 60% more likely to sleep with someone they’ve just met. Well, that explains a lot about our country, and our national beverage, doesn’t it? Although Rudder gathered this data via extensive questionnaires taken by OKCupid users a few years ago, his work was before its time, given that dating app use continues to rise and not everyone’s online looking for pure hookups. We might be all about the convenience of love in technologically advanced times, but that doesn’t mean we’re not still romantics at heart too. Given recent explosive interest in “How to Fall In Love In 36 Questions,” originally featured in The New York Times’ Modern Love section, modern-day singles clearly believe we can have our cake and to it too, when it comes to romance and hot first date sex. Now, can we also get a round of beer with this cake?
