This Tuesday night saw the TIFF premiere of Mommy, the 5th and most recent film from the impressive 25 year old Quebec-born phenom, Xavier Dolan. The after-party was hosted by Valdez on King West, who did a phenomenal job running the event, receiving tons of love from celebrity guests for playing the perfect TIFF hosts.
The party really wasn’t expected to get as big as it did, but what can we say? It seems Dolan can do no wrong: everything this kid touches turns to gold. Since winning the prestigious Jury Prize at Cannes earlier this year at the ridiculously young age of 25, all eyes in the film world have been fixed on this young man. At Cannes and now at TIFF, Mommy has generated almost as much buzz as the prodigal young man behind it. Almost.
Oh, and did we mention that for the Jury Prize this year, Cannes made the rare decision of sharing the award between two filmmakers? One was the 25 year old Xavier Dolan. The other? Legendary filmmaker, and 83-year-old Jean-Luc Goddard. That’s a 58 year difference – not bad for a quarter century’s work.
