The whirlwind opening TIFF weekend has come and gone but the party circuit is far from over. Last night, Birks hosted the fourth-annual Birks Diamond Tribute to the Year’s Women in Film at the Shangri-La Hotel (or “The Shang,” as most of Toronto’s local celebs and socialites call it.)
The party was full of A-listers and notable Canadian guests
The party was in celebration of twelve of Canada’s most well-renowned women in film. This year’s honourees include actors Amanda Crew, Caroline Dhavernas, Christine Horne, Sandra Oh and Jennifer Podemski; directors Tracey Deer, Ann Marie Fleming, April Mullen, Léa Pool and Ann Shin; as well as scriptwriters Emma Donoghue and Marie Vien.
The event was hella huge – with a reported 700 invite-only guests in attendance – unlike many of the intimate premiere parties for hosted at the allusive Soho House. Some notable guests included Stacey McKenzie, singer-songwriter Chantal Kreviazuk, designer Joe Mimran, TIFF Rising Star alumni actor Julia Sarah Stone, singer Kiesza and TV personalities Drew and Jonathan Scott, aka the Property Brothers.
Guests were treated with drinks and Birks gift bags
Formally dressed and well made-up (Toronto’s blow bars must be making a killing!), guests were taking snaps on the large outdoor patio with huge signature-Birks-blue balloons floating overhead. During the speeches and award ceremony, the city’s Who’s Who were all up in arms about the bar being politely cut off until the speeches wrapped. Gotta love us thirsty little Torontonians, eh? After the speeches, everyone flocked to the stand-alone patio bar as if they were giving away high-end Birks diamonds, as they were enthusiastically handed Prosecco DOC, La Gioiosa, wine, or their cocktail of choice (many asking to make it a double).
The party went well past the 7pm wrap time, where lingerers – you guessed it – were seen barside asking for just-one-more-drink as if this was the first and last open bar they’ve ever and will ever endure in this beautiful life. As people finally made their way out, they were given gift bags with a S’well x Birks water bottle, a L’Oreal nail polish, and a Birks 1879 magazine.
