How many of us have had drunken nights with friends while watching a game at the Loose Moose? I know I have, and most of our View the Vibe team has, too. Well now I can honestly say that I am going to go to Loose Moose for a fabulous dinner – and maybe a couple drinks – but definitely for the food and vibe…
This past Wednesday night, Adam and I were privy to a special introduction to the new Loose Moose – a new look, a new menu, and the largest draught beer list I’ve ever seen. Outstanding is all I can say, and I cannot wait to go back.
First off the new look: farmhouse rustic décor with cool one-off antiques hanging all over the walls; a new bar that was designed with socializing in mind; beautiful large wooden communal tables and a British couch that has @SamMillarTO‘s name written all over it. We were there on the night the Canadians whipped the Leafs ass (sorry, I’m from Montreal and quite loyal) so the vibe was vibrant and energetic – combined with the new look, we didn’t want to leave.
Food. That is what people always ask me about… and it was outstanding! The new menu is innovative and elevated with a very creative chef at the helm. Formerly of Four Restaurant, the Sircorp spot that delivers calorie wise choices, Chef Matt Rosen has taken bar menu staples and tweaked them to create flavourful and inventive options that make you go “wow.” The owner of Loose Moose spent years in California and used his culinary experiences to inspire the new Loose Moose menu. Authentic tacos – they actually taste like the ones you get in Mexico. (They really do, I swear!) Sweet potato and potato french fries mixed with onions and served with a chili cilantro mayonnaise, a simple yet tasty combination. Meatball sliders topped with a Bocconcini ball that is deep-fried in pesto. Pork belly sliders that actually don’t taste like pure pork fat but rather a bite of Asian deliciousness. An amazingly filling and tasty salad with perfectly seared tuna. Dessert anyone? Mini salted caramel bacon donuts – yep that’s what I said. I don’t actually know how to describe these except that once you start, you may not stop so save up your calories!
Now, for the beer. As most of you know… I do not drink beer. However, since it’s such a big part of the new Loose Moose movement, I had to try some. (That, and they placed six different beers in front of me in sample sizes. Ooph!) With 54 beers on tap, Loose Moose has the largest draught beer selection downtown. And the prices are stupid good. I have to say… the beer cocktail I started with I could taste the beer but it was subtle and not overpowering. Went down easy. Most of the rest I didn’t love – but everyone else seemed to thoroughly enjoy the samples brought – but there was one from Dieu du Ciel in Montreal, the Peche Mortel, that I could have drank a whole bottle! Just goes to show, you always have to give something you don’t like another shot!
I must admit that I was not expecting much… I mean the Loose Moose was always just a bar that we ended up at, not a bar where we go for the food and atmosphere. Now my mind has changed. I was honestly blown away by the outstanding food, vibe and beer selection. I’ve already made plans to go back – it was that good. They are making food that will give you cravings. And when a bar can do that, you know it’s doing something right…
Editor’s Note: While Nicki may not have appreciated the immense selection of beers and samples, any connoisseur would commend Loose Moose on their tap selections. Like Nicki said about the food, outstanding best describes Loose Moose’s brews.
