The concept of meal delivery subscriptions is one that has been around for quite a while, with more options becoming available to consumers. But Toronto startup, SPATULA Foods, is taking it up a notch with its gourmet meal subscription service. It brings together local chefs to offer flash frozen meals that are ready to eat in 10 minutes. And all of this, starting at $12 a plate.
SPATULA Foods Gourmet Meal Subscription Service
Ian Weng, the former Head of Strategy at Uber Eats Canada, derived inspiration for the idea during his time in France while doing his MBA. He noticed the trend of flash frozen gourmet meals, which was enjoyed by all types of foodies in the European nation. At which point, he joined forces with Wallace Wong, who is a Michelin trained chef, Top Chef Canada finalist, and TikTok sensation to develop it into a business.
So how does it work? Simple. Chefs from all over the city have made their meals available for the platform, which are flash frozen to retain maximum freshness. And each meal is prepared with the same high quality ingredients as done in a restaurant, giving people the chance to enjoy gourmet meals at home.
Some of the meals on SPATULA include:
- Braised Beef Bourguignon with Pearl Onions and Pomme Purée by Chef Romain Avril
- Singapore Black Pepper Udon with Shrimp and Gai Lan by Chef Eric Chong
- Butternut Squash Fusilli with Pancetta, Sage, and Pumpkin Seeds by Chef Eugene Wong
- Honey Bourbon Chicken with Cajun Dirty Rice and Escovitch Pickle by Chef Ryan Hinkson
That’s just a few of the 15 meal options which are available to order. The portion prices start at $11.49. You can pick the delivery schedule between every one, two or three weeks and orders can placed online here.
