Whenever I go to a dinner party, I feel like I’ve entered the UN of dietary restrictions. My favorite course to prepare is dessert because I love to bake. But whenever I have vegans, I hit a road block. No dairy, no eggs?! Unfortunately I don’t have a vegan baking cookbook handy. But I don’t let that be a downer on my partay… I simply outsource.
So, below is a list of Toronto’s best vegan bakeries…
Through Being Cool
Through Being Cool is a Bloordale bakery and grocer. Their promise is they’re 100 percent vegan, 100 percent of the time. I also love the fact that they make their own preserves and condiments and support local farmers. They have everything from pretzels to cookies to doughnuts. We highly recommend the peanut butter crème. The only downer is that once they’re sold out, they’re out! So make sure you get there early if you want a good selection.

Bunner’s Bake Shop
These guys were one of Toronto’s very first bake shops catering to the vegan community. Located in the Junction, Bunner’s serves up daily fresh baked goods that are not only vegan but also gluten-free. Their product offering covers all the bases: doughnuts, cupcakes, muffins, bread, and the list goes on. For a real energy and nutrient booster try their Supersonic cookie, which is packed with seeds, oats, cranberries, and dark chocolate! For those who spend their entire Sundays in pyjamas, you’ll be happy to know that Bunner’s also delivers for a flat fee of $12 within downtown Toronto.
APieCalypse Now
APieCalypse Now’s owner. Jennifer Bundock, is a vegan activist. The storefront reflects upon her “rebellious” nature as well as serving as a home base for fundraising for causes that she supports. I prefer her savory items as the sweets are often a little too much so. There are also takeaway items such as savory pies, salads, spreads, and ice cream that you can grab. If the punny interpretation of the bakery’s namesake means anything – it means that the forces of vegan shall prevail.

Tori’s Bakeshop
Tori’s Bakeshop calls the Beaches home and is well-known for cupcakes. But you should also try the vegan BLT, where bacon takes shape in the form of coconut chips that are seasoned with tamari and maple syrup and smoked over hickory wood chips. They also a proper steeped cold tea; not just brewed hot tea with ice added to it. Our advice is to get there before 2pm because after that it’s pretty slim pickings. Did we also mention that the shop is super cute?
