It’s that joyful time of year where the crisp, cool air is filled with love, laughter, and holiday spirit. While we deck the halls and pencil in holiday plans, it also comes time for holiday gift shopping. We made our lists and checked them twice, and came up with two suggestions so good, you may also want to get them for yourself. After all – it is the season of giving.
Wine is easily a no-fail gift for the holidays. Not only are you gifting the wine inside the bottle, but also the story behind the production. Whether you’re hosting a holiday dinner party, attending as a guest, or just giving a thoughtful gift, these two highly rated and uniquely storied South American reds are surefire selections for that special someone on your list.
Truly a unique and highly-rated wine, Norton Privada, originally reserved for the Swarovski family’s private cellar, was a request from the late Gernot Langes-Swarovski to create the best wine to enjoy among friends. The family kept it “privada” (private in Spanish), for many years before the first vintage was publicly released in 2001.
Its grapes come from the winery´s oldest vineyards, which are between an impressive 50 and 90 years old. The wine is a blended from a special selection of the best barrels of Malbec, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, resulting in a harmonious, complex, and elegant blend.
Pairing perfectly with any holiday dinner, Privada is deep-purple in colour with an aromatic, medium nose of just-ripened black plums, blackberries, red cherries, red currants, blossom and forest floor. The palate mirrors the nose and is dry, medium-plus bodied, and balanced. Rich, silky and elegant with a lingering finish.
Emiliana Coyam is a 100% organic & biodynamic red blend mainly comprised of Syrah and Carmenère but can include up to seven other varietals such as Cabernet, Mourvèdre and Petit Verdot. While the varieties may change from one vintage to another, the spirit and soul always remain the same to maintain Coyam’s unique identity.
The name of the wine, Coyam, means oak forests in Mapudungún, the language of southern Chile’s indigenous people, the Mapuche. A majestic forest of native oak trees have dominated the landscape for centuries and surround the vineyards at Los Robles estate in Colchagua Valley, where the grapes for this special red blend are exclusively sourced from.
Coyam is a labour of love for head winemaker Noelia Orts. After traveling and working in many iconic wine regions, she was enchanted by Chilean wine as well as Emiliana’s philosophy around organic and biodynamic agriculture.
A deep plum-red color with violet hues, this wine has an intense nose that’s brimming with fruit such as red currants, strawberries and blackberries. Additional notes of spices such as vanilla and licorice emerge, accompanied by delicate violet touches. On the palate, it’s a juicy wine with good volume and balance, ripe tannins and well-balanced acidity that lends it an enjoyable freshness.
