A few weeks ago, we finally headed out to meet some friends at the recently-opened Steel Toad Brewpub in False Creek – our modus operandi: score some brunch and hunker down for a much-needed catch-up session.
Located directly off East 2nd Avenue in an area that is undergoing a complete revamp, Steel Toad Brewpub is a welcome addition to the neighbourhood. With its huge full-length windows and vaulted ceilings, it definitely scores big on the airy and open scale – and we love that.

A wraparound bar stands front-and-centre at Steel Toad Brewpub, anchoring the room. We can see how this has garnered good reviews for the resto as a go-to spot for catching the latest game. Sports fans will love Steel Toad’s oversized (at least 15ft) screen that showcases all the action.
Back to brunch fixings though. Steel Toad Brewpub has plenty of options available to satiate your appetite, though you may want to add a few sides to ensure you don’t walk out still feeling hungry. If you read between the lines, what we’re really saying is that their portions are on the small side.
The brunch menu itself has a relatively healthy selection of options: ranging from traditional eggs and bacon; to steak and eggs; fruit and granola; to more adventurous smoked meat creations.
A series of skillets are available, all of which sounded pretty tasty and cost no more than $11.00. Our group opted to try the turkey sausage with rapini, poached eggs, tomato and potato, as well as the spinach, asparagus, and potato frittata. The skillets arrived piping hot, wafting with flavours, and were quickly devoured. The only issue we encountered was that the frittata seemed a bit overcooked — given the heat of the skillet, the eggs got a bit overdone on the bottom. Otherwise, a great choice.

Intrigue got us, and we ordered the black forest ham and scrambled eggs served in a Yorkshire pudding cup.
Our final dish was the simple and straight-up “Two Eggs” plate (two eggs, potatoes, roasted tomato, sausages, and bacon). You can’t really go wrong with that. We ordered the bacon crispy and were happily obliged. A side of toast would have been perfect, but we probably didn’t need it at that point.
Other brunch items that we’ll try out next time include: the rather decadent-sounding French toast bread pudding, healthy chicken piccata salad, or one of their breakfast pizzas.
Check out Steel Toad Brewpub + Dining Hall (97 E.2nd Ave) for weekend brunch starting at 10am, or pop by for lunch or dinner seven days a week.
