Originally offering an evening-only menu, one of our favourite French inspired haunts in Gastown, L’Abattoir, is now dishing up exquisite goods for lunch during the week. Coupled with this culinary news is the opening of their brand new adjacent private dining room… and we’ve got the lowdown on both.
Ditch the desk weekdays and head down to L’Abattoir for lunch starting at 11:30am and running to 2:30pm, where you’ll find plenty of tasty bites to help get you through the day.
The culinary team has crafted an elegant menu guaranteed to please (and get you in and out within the hour). Expect those classic and clean flavours that characterize L’Abattoir’s nightly fare to be reflected on their lunchtime menu with dishes like Steelhead served with fried potatoes, dill and horseradish; a shrimp, tomato and potato frittata finished in creamy hollandaise and peppery arugula; and a beef dip with tongue, salad, thickly cut fries, and jus gras for dipping. To keep things simple, choose between a two or three course menu or select a meal a la carte.
To whet the whistle midday, wash it all down with the latest creations courtesy of resident expert Shaun Layton, who has designed some new cocktails meant to compliment noontime dining. We recommend their House Aperol Spritz with white wine, Aperol, seltzer, and a hint of orange. Or, you can drink up Mad Men style and pay homage to power lunches of the past with a martini made with Tranqueray 10, Dolin Dry, and pickled onions. That’ll definitely help you drown out the rest of the day…
Lunch aside, L’Abattoir has also expanded to include a swish-looking, new 1,200 square-foot private dining area you’ll love. Make your way there via the kitchen and past a vintage Bonnet range oven taking center stage. The room features exposed brick walls, beamed ceilings, and steel framed windows that speak to the history of the space, while sleek glass, steel accents, and custom chandeliers add a modern finish. Slick and sexy indeed.
We’re thinking this spot will fill up as soon as the holiday season hits given it’s big enough for 50 people seated or 80 standing, yet retains an intimate ambiance throughout.
L’Abattoir is located at 217 Carrall Street in Gastown.
