Are you heading into the weekend wondering what to get up to? Look no further as we’ve got a crop of events that will keep you happily occupied and that’ll fill up that agenda…
Get baked this weekend, or at least scoop up a plethora of baked goodies, at the Baker’s Market over at Vancouver’s Moberly Arts & Cultural Centre. This free market is one tasty treat that takes place on Sunday from 11am to 3pm and will have you drooling. Open to wannabe bakers, schooled-pros, and established bakers alike, variety is definitely on the menu. Score yourself homemade cakes, breads, muffins, cupcakes, chocolates, macarons and more.
Get into the seasonal spirit this weekend and head down to Granville Island for Winterruption. Now in its 9th year, this island-wide festival celebrates all things local and has an expanded menu of event offerings. Catch live music, partake in fun workshops, explore local artists’ exhibits, nosh on tasty food from vendors, and be sure to head over to Edible Canada House’s Festival Under the Bridge (ticketed event) for even more festivities.
Looking for something to laugh about this weekend? Well the Northwest Comedy Festival will more than fit the bill (and have you howling). It kicks off just in time for the weekend (running until February 22nd) and has plenty of laughable options. Headlined by Pee Wee Herman (who is set to host Best of the Fest), catch local and international comedians as they take to the stage with their shtick. Whether it’s a pop-up improv show, or stand up performance from the likes of Bobby Lee or Natasha Leggero, the festival has plenty to offer.
If you find yourself pining for the green stuff (and by that we mean golf greens), then head over to the Pacific National Exhibition to catch this weekend’s Vancouver Golf & Travel Show (February 15th and 16th). As one of the largest golf consumer shows in Western Canada, not only does it unofficially/officially signal the start of the golf season ahead, but it gives you the chance to test drive new equipment, catch demonstrations, check out more than 100 exhibitors, and soak up professional tips on the game. While you’re at the show, do a little pre-planning and book a golf destination vacation or two.
Dances for a Small Stage is back for another jaw-dropping year of creative performances guaranteed to wow. Hosted at various venues around town, see talented artists take to a microscopic stage (10′ x 13′) to perform contemporary dances. You’ll see moves as choreographed by internationally known talents such as Peter Chu and Stacey Tookey, and be privy to the footwork of some of the city’s top performers.
Though it’s not taking place this weekend, we think it’s definitely time you nabbed tickets for the upcoming Vancouver International Wine Festival, taking place February 24th through to March 2nd. Whether it’s the grand international public tasting you’re after, a more refined seminar, bubbles and brunch, or a winemakers’ dinner, this fest offers it all. This year’s focus is all about ‘Vive la France’, so you can bet there’ll be plenty of tasty sips on offer.
