Though the weather is looking a bit on the patchy side (well, that’s pretty predictable here on the west coast) one thing is certain: there’s loads going on around town worth checking out.
Start things off with some DOXA action (it’s the final documentary film fest weekend after all). This fest celebrates global documentaries, showcasing the filmmaking talents from crews in more than 20 different countries who tell unique, affecting, comedic, and powerful stories you don’t want to miss. We recommend this weekend’s screenings of The Circle, Death Metal Angola, A Brony Tale and Microtopia.
You might also want to spend some time this weekend exploring one of the many Vancouver-based Farmers’ Markets that have re-launched as of late. Back for another great year are the Trout Lake Farmers’ Market, Kitsilano Farmers’ Market, and, starting up again soon, the West End Farmers’ Market (relaunches May 31st).
Though we didn’t quite make it out in time for the official ‘launch party’ for one of Gastown’s soon-to-be hotspots affiliated with Blacktail Florist, dubbed Kanaka, we recommend you meander down and check it out for yourself this weekend… it is, after all, Vancouver’s newest Tiki Bar – and it’s open until 2am!
Don’t miss the Annual Spot Prawn Festival that goes down at False Creek (just next to Granville Island) this weekend. Don’t wait to purchase your tickets to gain access to the sell-out prawn boil that’s taking place on Saturday. This tasty event benefits the Chefs’ Table Society and is a must-not-miss in our foodie books.
In the spirit of Mother’s Day this Sunday, treat her to a day of local shopping at the spring edition of Got Craft?, where about 75 or so local artisans will be showcasing their original works. Or head over to the Blim Market: Mother’s Day Edition and enjoy a relaxing afternoon checking out 50+ vendors featuring vintage finds, cards, gifts, pottery, sweets, and more. The first 20 moms through the door will score a fantastic swag bag!
Alternatively, treat her to a very special brunch a deux and nab spots at Sunday’s Swallow Tail Secret Supper Club’s three-course Mother’s Day Brunch. Tickets are limited (only $49) and can be purchased here.
