Don’t let people tell you your 30s will be the best time of your life in a tone that suggests your looks will fade so you better find inner peace. Vicki’s Pick is a weekly beauty column that features Vicki’s all-time favourite beauty products and latest discoveries for women in their 30s who plan on staying pretty on the outside for a long, long time. Inner peace is optional.
Call me jaded, but after the winter that was I was expecting summer to make like Paris Hilton at a paid club promotion gig and stop by for a few photo opps before booking it out of town. I penciled in summer for the weekend of July 19th in my iPhone calendar, but apparently I was dead wrong because, dudes, it started already!
If you’ve yet to make the transition into summer beauty products, fear not. It’s a lot more acceptable to worship Stevie Nicks as your personal style icon in the heat-wave months than it is in the heart of December. That means prepping for summer beauty is a lot easier than getting winter ready (read: investing in pricey moisturizers, exfoliators and seasonal effective disorder prevention lamps). All you really need for the sweet, sweet months of June, July and August is waterproof mascara, a good SPF and, last but not least, an amazing red nail polish for your toes. Forget waterproof eye shadows and bronzer; a pretty pedicure is truly what makes the difference between looking like Courtney Love and Kate Moss when you’re going for the disheveled look.
Right now I’m all over the new Dior Vernis in Pandore. The lacquer has a “gel coat” finish, which means it dries smooth and shiny like perfectly executed stained glass. The expertly cut application brush has a rounded tip that makes even my overly caffeinated, shaky strokes look like they were made by a professional. And it’s Dior, so do I really need to explain why it doesn’t chip? Okay, fine… It has something to do with organic silicon or something “science-y” like that, but just trust me on this one. You can spend a day frolicking on the beach re-enacting scenes from Dawson’s Creek and you’ll still have perfect polish at the end of the day by the bonfire.
The best part about Dior Vernis in Pandore is that it’s the perfect shade of bright red without the winter-y blue undertones. Besides, if last year’s weather is any indication, you’ve got September through to next May to return to your winter colour palette. For now, summon your inner bohemian flower child and just enjoy how easy it is to forget that summer ever left…
