Let’s Go To The Ex!
Mid-August means that Toronto is getting geared up for the city’s beloved CNE! With an international hall packed with vendors coming in from across the globe and a midway filled with games and rides for the kids and adults alike, the CNE is most-definitely how Toronto says au revoir to the summer.
However, this year the CNE’s Food Building will be celebrating their 60th anniversary, making this year’s trip to the exhibition grounds that much more special! Every year, the CNE features a crazy carnival dish (remember that burger that sent people to the hospital), however for their 60th anniversary the Food Building will be featuring a slew of wacky dishes that you won’t want to miss.
Prepare yourselves for these…
Comfort Food from Fran’s Restaurant
Fran’s is bringing some big dishes to the Ex this year. You can expect plates of their ‘Big Breakfast Maple Toast’ (with bacon, sausage, sunny-side egg all drizzled with maple syrup); their ‘Spicy Peanut Butter Sriracha Rolls’ (for those who like foods that bring the heat); along with their ‘Thanksgiving Waffles’ (made from cranberry stuffing loaded with roast turkey, mashed potatoes and house-made gravy). These guys are taking comfort food to a whole new level!
Cocoa-Infused Fried Chicken from Coco’s Fried Chicken
The Ex is giving the LA-born chocolate fried chicken trend a Canadian twist. With the cocoa being fused into the chicken’s marinade, coating and seasoning, this dish isn’t for the faint of heart. Oh and don’t forget to get a side of chocolate-ketchup with that fried chicken of yours.
Liquid Nitrogen Sorbet & Gelato from Eative
If you’re a fan of gastronomy and culinary sciences, the scientists over at Eative are giving your traditional ice cream a run for its money. One flavour that’s a must-try is their made-to-order nitrogen concoction of Passion Fruit & Guava. Dee-lish!
Crowbar from Hula Girl Espresso
Ain’t nobody got time for a plain ol’ croissant. The folks at Hula Girl Espresso taking croissants up a notch by baking them with a full chocolate bar inside the pastry. Mars Bars, Kit Kat and Reese’s Cup are just a few of the options you can get baked inside your buttery croissant!
Not only will the Food Building be host to many crazy foods, but the Midway will be home to some odd deep-fried rice balls at Corrado’s Authentic Italian Food…because the Ex isn’t the Ex without a few deep-fried goodies. You can also expect to find The ‘Fu-Ana’ at Meester Mike’s, which features a banana dipped in chocolate, coated in funnel cake batter and then deep-fried, of course.
So be sure to release your inner foodie this year at the CNE!
