It was starting to get a little scary. Like, Nightmare on Elm Street scary. Except Elm Street was my forehead. Like many men with not enough time and slightly too much testosterone, my eyebrows have been known to go feral periodically. Luckily for me (and those who have to look at me regularly), I got to try something new recently: eyebrow threading.
Threading is not the typical route most men take. By my observation, a begrudging plucking every once in a while is about as far as most dudes go. However, that may be changing. Dr. Maria Moses, the owner of the adorable, full-service Rhythm Spa (where I got my brows did) at 199 Church Street, Suite 2, estimates that about 1/10 of her 5,000+ annual threading clients are male. While not a huge percentage, it appears to be growing and it shows that men are opening up their minds, and faces, to the idea. The Eastern epilation technique consists of doubling over strings of thread and then twisting them in order to remove short lines of hair at the follicle level.
Having never been fully threaded before, my preconceptions about it made me a little apprehensive. However, I went in with an open mind and was not disappointed with the results. The process lasted less than 10 minutes, was not overly painful (admittedly, it stings a little but what do you expect?), and the results are crisp, clean, defined lines of hairless goodness. It is much faster and easier than plucking and does not remove facial oils like waxing. FYI, removing those oils puts you on the fast-track to wrinkling. Scary? Like Nightmare on Elm Street scary, yo.
I would totally do it again and for the man afraid of getting his eyebrows threaded, here are the 5 reasons I would recommend it…
It’s fast: The whole process takes less than 10 minutes, start to finish. If you’re afraid of your buddies finding out you get threaded, put on a fedora and sunglasses and pull a Clark Kent. Or embrace that your face is going to look exponentially more awesome than theirs.
No standing in the mirror wreaking havoc: We’ve all been there. One hair too many on one side leads to two too many on the other and before you know it, you look like Freddy Krueger pre-sunburn. Trust a professional.
It’s not that painful: No pain, no gain. But really, the pain isn’t bad and it doesn’t last long. Also, suck it up and be pretty.
It’s super precise: You can get your eyebrows cleaned up nicely (like I did) or go full-blown chola brows if you want. The possibilities are limitless!
It’s not expensive: Rhythm Spa, which was amazing, offers deals on Tuesdays for $5 eyebrow shaping and it’s $79 for unlimited eyebrows for a year.
